Job overview

To be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The specific aim of the BCPS Haematology and Blood Transfusion Operational Manager role is to manage the day-to-day operations of a specific area of the laboratory service, at the hub or ESL laboratory, as an integral element of Pathology. The post holder is required to support in the delivery of a service that is compliant with HCPC, Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005, and ISO Standards pertaining to UKAS accreditation. 

Main duties of the job

We are looking for suitable candidate for the operational manager role responsible for the day-to-day management  covering the Dudley ESL for Haematology and Transfusion. 

To be responsible for the delivery of the quality management system and meeting key performance indicators for that particular area of a laboratory service.

To be responsible for ensuring that all activities are undertaken in line with relevant policies of, accrediting and regulatory frameworks.

To manage staff on a day-to-day basis within the area covered including appraisal, training, CPD, performance, staff leave, sickness absence and participating in staff recruitment.

To have delegated responsibility for informing and implementing strategic developments within their team.

To manage delegated elements of staffing budgets and hold signatory status on behalf of their line manager.

To represent Pathology for issues relating to their particular area, which would involve liaising with representatives of the local commissioners and other external agencies.

Essential criteria
  • MSc Biomedical Science or equivalent or Fellowship of the IBMS
  • State Registration (HCPC)
Desirable criteria
  • MBA or Equivalent Management Qualification

Experience/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Supervisory experience with staff management.
  • Good understanding of IT and LIMS.
  • Budget and finance management
  • Good understanding of laboratory accreditation quality systems and laboratory QMS.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Haematology and Blood Transfusion techniques.
  • Proven project management skills
  • Health and Safety Regulations

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Strong communication and people management skills.
  • Ability to motivate staff groups and implement agreed change.
  • Using negotiating and persuasive skills in the best interests of the service
  • Work effectively as part of the senior management team for Haem/BT
