Job overview

The Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) will support the Lead for Professional Practice and A-EQUIP in developing a framework to support full implementation of the A-EQUIP (Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement) model. This model provides a continuous improvement process that builds upon personal and professional resilience, enhances quality of care, and supports preparedness for registered midwives/nurses in appraisal and professional revalidation.

The aim is that this continuous improvement process of the “A-EQUIP” model will become an intrinsic part of everyone’s job, every day, in all parts of the system. Thus, the post holder will assist the Trust by implementing the elements of the A-EQUIP model utilising the guidance issued by NHS England in April 2017.

Main duties of the job

To work in collaboration with the Lead for Professional Practice and A-EQUIP, Lead PMA and fellow sessional PMAs/PNAs, to support the workforce by utilising the components of the A-EQUIP model; utilising their highly developed communication skills to employ the principles of Restorative Clinical Supervision to increase staff resilience, and to improve care for patients and their families.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of first-degree level study or equivalent
  • Completion of an approved programme of study leading to the Professional Midwifery Advocate qualification, at Masters (level 7) level
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of PMA work post completion of study
  • Able to demonstrate expert knowledge and experience
  • Audit/ Risk Management/ Research experience
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of implementing and leading a PMA service

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Must have a robust knowledge of the principles underpinning the A-EQUIP model, experience of communicating this to colleagues when performing RCSand have
  • Have the ability to deputise for the Lead for Professional Practice and A-EQUIP, in leading the team in promoting the model within the Trust
  • Report writing skills
  • Digitally literate and able to use Microsoft office packages

PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

Essential criteria
  • Effective time management skills, planning and organizing a range of complex activities such as an education programme or group clinical supervision
  • Ability to work as part of a team; working clinically when required, acting as a role model and mentor to the wider team
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, influence, motivate, and gain the respect of other healthcare professionals at all levels of the organisation

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Expert problem solving and decision making skills (able to make swift, appropriate decisions in an emergency), where there are complex facts or situations requiring analysis and interpretation
  • Able to provide and receive highly complex or sensitive information and manage the consequential situations and communicate (using a variety of methods) sensitively with staff at all levels whilst maintaining appropriate confidentiality
