This role involves managing a defined caseload of adults with learning disabilities and associated complex needs, including autism, mental health challenges, and sensory or physical impairments.

The post holder will assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate Occupational Therapy interventions using a client-centred approach.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, they will provide expert advice to service users, families, and colleagues while also leading service development initiatives.

The role includes supervisory responsibilities for junior staff and students, active participation in service planning and audits, and a commitment to professional development and clinical governance

Main duties of the job

To manage a defined caseload of adults with learning disabilities who may also have additional physical, sensory, communication and/or mental health needs. Conditions include autism, challenging behaviours, complex permanent disabilities, degenerative conditions and sensory processing difficulties. 

To be responsible for the assessment, clinical diagnosis, planning, implementing and evaluating of interventions in a client centred way for your allocated caseload with regular support through clinical supervision. 

To work within the multidisciplinary team and provide advice and guidance for families, carers and multidisciplinary team. 

To lead elements of planning, development and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Service. 

To supervise band 5 Occupational Therapists and / or assistants and manage students.

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary team working
  • Ability to be flexible and participate in a changing NHS environment
  • Ability to demonstrate self motivation and initiative when working independently and in a variety of situations
  • Ability to deal sensitively with people with challenging needs and varying communication needs in a client centred, non discriminating way

Skills / Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Trained in the use of Assessment and Motor and Processing Skills
  • Trained in the use of Sensory Integration (Module 1)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a Band 5 OT within Learning Disabilities and/or Mental Health
  • Completed preceptorship
Desirable criteria
  • Have used the Model of Human Occupation in practice

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria
  • Diploma / degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered Occupational Therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Documented evidence of CPD related OT / PLD

Other Job Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel to and access a variety of different environments covering long distances and transporting equipment
  • Ability to manually handle service users and / or equipment safely and to attain positioning necessary to perform safe and effective clinical intervention
  • Ability to work flexibly within the full week
