We are offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dynamic nurse to lead our Anticoagulation Nursing Team as Unit Manager (Band 7).
This is a pivotal leadership role for a clinically confident professional with advanced nursing skills and specialist experience in anticoagulation. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

The role will involve working across hospital sites and community clinics, so a full UK driving licence is essential. Trust vehicles are provided to support travel requirements.

Main duties of the job
To be a high profile, accessible and responsive leader with the responsibility and
accountability for the provision, management and development of a quality
specialist Anticoagulant nursing service that meets the needs of the patients in
accordance with national and local policies and initiatives.
To assist the Matron/Group Director of Nursing to develop and implement effective
systems and working practices to facilitate service developments within the
department and encourage team members to embrace best practice and new
models of working.
Set high professional standards as the clinical leader for all department staff. By
ensuring that all staff have the adequate skills and competence to deliver high
quality and clinically effective patient care.
The post holder will act as an independent practitioner using advanced clinical skills
to assess, diagnose, treat, prescribe plans of care and mange caseloads of patients
They will also need to be able to make informed decisions within their own area
and scope of professional practice, involving patients and public to ensure
agreed clinical standards and targets are met.
To manage and co-ordinate staff and clinical activity within the ward/department,
playing a key role within the multi-disciplinary team.
Take the lead role for department change management activity, developing and
maintaining strong communication links with divisional operational management
and others.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Lead the development of the Anticoagulation Nursing Service, ensuring care is patient-centred and evidence-based.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge and innovative practice within dermatology and anticoagulation.
- Act as a role model, delivering high standards of holistic care and clinical leadership.
- Complete prescriptions according to treatment plans and clnical indication
- Accept direct patient referrals, perform differential diagnoses, and coordinate care with consultants.
- Support patients and families facing emotional challenges, referring to Clinical Psychology as appropriate.
- Initiate discharges and transfers to specialist centres or other care settings.
- Develop nurse-led clinics and specialist protocols aligned with service needs.
- Provide expert clinical advice to patients, carers, GPs, and community nurses.
- Identify and meet the educational needs of patients and carers.
- Attend and present at weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership across the organisation, supporting junior staff and conducting appraisals.
- Line manage the Anticoagulation team, overseeing leave, sickness absence, and ESR/e-roster processes.
- Manage nursing and non-pay budgets, reporting discrepancies to the Matron.
- Order and requisition anticoagulation supplies.
- Contribute to improvement plans, audits, and exception reports.
- Promote continuous service improvement and lead delegated projects.
- Attend team meetings and contribute to agendas, working across organisational boundaries.
- Conduct annual Health & Safety audits and escalate service risks appropriately.
- Represent the department at meetings and forums in the absence of senior nursing staff.
- Participate in divisional/trust cover rotas as required.
Education & Staff Development
- Create a dynamic learning environment, supporting preceptorship and mentorship for staff and students.
- Act as a mentor/preceptor, fostering a positive learning culture and supporting clinical skill development.
- Promote health education and health promotion among patients, carers, and staff.
- Conduct regular appraisals and contribute to departmental training plans.
- Facilitate nursing team education through teaching, assessing, and mentorship programmes.
- Engage with local and national networks to enhance practice and promote the department and Trust.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards and support reflective practice.
Research, Audit & Clinical Governance
- Lead and coordinate audit and benchmarking activities, developing action plans to improve care.
- Promote clinical excellence through evidence-based practice and standard setting.
- Stay informed on current nursing research and disseminate findings within the team.
- Support and participate in departmental research activities and policy development.
- Manage risk processes, including assessments and action planning.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource on national, local, and Trust policies.
- Support staff and service users in policy and service development within the specialty.

- Significant post registration experience
- Proven team leader level, managing change and team development
- Evidence of previous resource management experience and service development
- Experience in research and audit.
Qualifications

- RN (Adult) Current NMC registration
- Diploma/Degree Qualification in health related subject
- Post graduate qualification relevant to clinical speciality anticoagulation or willingness to undertake postgraduate training
- Leadership or management qualification
- Teaching and Assessing qualifications
- Counselling course/Advanced communication
- Non-medical prescribers qualification V300 or equivalant
- UK Driving licence
Desirable criteria
- Counselling Skills Certificate qualification
- Masters degree or working towards
- European Computer Driving Licence
