Job overview

As a band 5 the postholder will work under supervision from band 6 and above nurses.

As a mental health liaison nurse you will be expected to undertake front-line assessments, liaise with acute colleagues and develop clinical management plans either for patients passing through the hospital, or admitted to wards under the supervision of senior staff within the team. The reason for this post is to enhance the support in the A&E departments around providing prompt response for assessment and assisting to treatment delivery within the A&E 4-hour targets. The post holder would also be expected to support the development of smoother pathways out of hospital for those admitted to wards and ensure appropriate mental health interventions take place whilst people are in patients in the acute hospital. You should expect to, and be willing to make a significant contribution to the night rota within the team, work weekends, and also to cross cover other Liaison Psychiatry teams as required.

Main duties of the job

·         Will act as a nurse within the acute hospital  service whilst liaising with other professionals

·         Will work as a generic psychiatric liaison nurse

·         Responsible for the undertaking initial assessments within level of competence and under direct or indirect supervision from a senior clinical colleague

·         Responsible for developing a treatment plan within level of competence and under direct or indirect supervision from a senior clinical colleague

·         Responsible for evaluating treatment plans implemented by the psychiatric liaison team

·         As a nurse will work within agreed parameters and have a working knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision and audit

·         Will be responsible for ensuring effective communication pathways are maintained

·         Will be responsible for ensuring the promotion of equality, diversity and rights in accordance with good practice and legislation

·         Take responsibility for identifying and contributing to the training needs necessary in providing quality evidence based care as appropriate

·         Support senior colleagues in the effective assessment and delivery of the Psychiatric Liaison clinical service
