Job overview
We are delighted to invite applications for 5 Specialty Doctor posts in Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. These are a combination of substantive and 12-month fixed-term positions (4x Substantive and x1 Fixed term to cover maternity leave).
This is a career-defining opportunity for experienced SAS doctors with ambitions towards CESR or clinical excellence within a large, innovative and forward-thinking anaesthetic department. The successful candidates will work across Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Obstetric Anaesthesia, with opportunities to develop sub-specialty interests.
Our department supports flexible job planning, well-being, and educational development. With a strong CESR mentorship programme, state-of-the-art MMUH facilities, and an outstanding team culture, this role offers both professional growth and job satisfaction.
Main duties of the job
The successful Specialty Doctors will play a key role in delivering high-quality anaesthetic and critical care services across a range of clinical settings within the Trust. You will participate in the resident on-call rota (1:10), rotating through Critical Care, Obstetric Anaesthesia, and the Resident Additional Anaesthetist Cover (RAAC). Daytime duties will include the provision of anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery, including general theatres, obstetrics, and remote site anaesthesia (e.g., endoscopy, CT, and MRI). You will also have opportunities to contribute to our state-of-the-art 32-bed Critical Care Unit, participating in supervised and independent management of complex cases, and supporting outreach services for deteriorating patients on the wards.
In Obstetric Anaesthesia, your responsibilities will encompass epidural services, labour analgesia, and anaesthesia for elective and emergency Caesarean sections, working closely with a multidisciplinary maternity team within one of the busiest inner-city obstetric units in the region. You will be encouraged to develop and lead on a sub-specialty interest, such as regional anaesthesia, pre-assessment, trauma, education, peri-operative medicine or simulation.
Working for our organisation
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country’s most culturally diverse areas. It’s a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.
We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.
Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.
Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population.” It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It’s what makes us unique.
We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose. When we say we’re ‘with you all the way’ we want you to know that we mean it. Visit the SWB website to find out more about our ambitions and people plans.
