Here at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust we’re committed to recruiting and supporting a diverse workforce and we welcome applications from all parts of the community. We are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities whilst employing people to our organisation who meet our Trust values of ambition, respect and compassion. With the opening of our new hospital, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, it’s the coming together of expertise from every corner of our organisation and a show of our commitment to provide better healthcare and create more jobs and so much more. We at the Trust actively encourage Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and disabled applicants, as well as members of the armed forces community and value the positive impact that difference has on our teams. We are committed to equality and diversity within our workforce.
Job overview
Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is delighted to invite applications for two Consultant Anaesthetist posts with a specialist interest in Pain Management service. These posts reflect our commitment to expanding and enhancing our pain services in line with rising demand and innovation. Applicants with either dual interests in Anaesthesia and Pain or those wishing to practice Pain Medicine exclusively are welcome to apply.
These roles offer a unique opportunity to contribute to a large, dynamic, and multidisciplinary team at one of the UK’s most forward-thinking NHS trusts. Based primarily at the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) and the City Health Campus, the posts combine clinical excellence, innovation, and service development in an environment that fosters wellbeing, flexibility, and professional growth.
There are ample opportunities to develop personal interest in, amongst other things, management, governance, peri-operative medicine, service development and education and training. Our new hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, has been successfully running for nearly a year and hence the post holders must understand the ongoing changes within the trust service and be prepared to contribute actively to the process. ”Sustainability” is at the heart of everything we do and have various project streams. New ideas and experience in this area will be highly welcomed.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the delivery and advancement of our expanding Pain Management Service. They will be responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based care to patients living with complex chronic pain conditions. Clinical duties will include running multidisciplinary team (MDT) pain clinics, performing interventional procedures under fluoroscopic and ultrasound guidance, and conducting virtual consultations as part of our modern, flexible care model. In addition to their pain management responsibilities, the appointee will undertake anaesthetic sessions tailored to their sub-specialty interests and aligned with service demands.
The postholder will be actively involved in shaping new and emerging services, such as the Medicine Optimization Management (MOM) clinic, Adolescent Pain Service, Pelvic Pain MDTs, and the SCAT (Spinal Cord Assessment & Treatment) clinic. T
Pain clinics are supported by a fully integrated MDT approach involving APPs, psychologists, physiotherapists, and nurse specialists, ensuring that patients receive holistic and personalised care. In addition to the clinical excellence demonstrated across all services, the department was recognised nationally as the BMJ Anaesthesia and Peri-operative Team of the Year, and our Critical Care Unit has been rated “Outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) — one of only a handful of such services in the UK.
Working for our organisation
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country’s most culturally diverse areas. It’s a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.
We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.
Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.
Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population.” It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It’s what makes us unique.
We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose. When we say we’re ‘with you all the way’ we want you to know that we mean it.
