Job overview

The post holder will work in the Paaeditarics department, being an integral member of the Paediatric team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing ward support as a ‘middle grade’, working alongside the consultant of the week to provide inpatient care for Paediatric patients. They will also gain experience in outpatient clinics . 

This is a post that has been designed for the need of a trainee wishing to gain further experience in Acute Paediatrics within the NHS in the UK. This will be suitable for an experienced doctor at ST3 or higher level.

This post will provide the successful applicant with 12 months in a Tier 2 post and the post-holder will be based in general paediatrics. The post-holder will be expected to participate in the Tier 2 on-call rota to cover General Paediatrics during day and overnight working on average not more than 48 hours weekly.

This post would suit a candidate who would like to gain skills in paediatrics in both the acute setting and in the outpatient environment. There are opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in sub-specialist areas within acute paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the high-quality care delivered to children and young people, in both inpatient and outpatient settings

 To collaborate with colleagues in all disciplines (including primary and tertiary care where appropriate) to achieve an integrated service for patients.

 To develop skills and interests appropriate for the sub-speciality general paediatric service.

 To develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues within the department and in linked adult specialties and participate, where appropriate, in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.

 To have or develop a special interest to supplement the skills of the current medical team.

To actively participate in the appraisal process for Tier 1 resident doctors, with consultant supervision.

 To take part in the teaching / education programme for Resident  doctors and medical students.

 To develop and maintain good communications with local General Practitioners, tertiary specialist colleagues and appropriate outside agencies.

 To show involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit within the department.

To ensure own practice is up-to-date.

To maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council.

 To provide cover for colleagues in respect of periods of planned leave and contribute to prospective cover for unplanned leave.
