Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from multiple sites covering Walsall. Our multidisciplinary services include rapid response and homebased care, so that those with long term conditions and the frail elderly can remain in their own homes.

Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Band 6 Nurse to join our dynamic Acute Medical Unit (AMU) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to take on greater responsibility in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, where you will play a pivotal role in managing patient care and ensuring smooth patient flow.

As a Band 6 Nurse in the AMU, you will oversee the care of patients with a wide range of acute medical conditions, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide timely, effective care. You will be responsible for coordinating patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring high-quality care is maintained throughout the patient’s journey. This includes leading on patient flow management and supervising junior staff while fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and compassionate care.

Your leadership skills will be put into practice as you support and guide your team, taking charge during board rounds with consultants and ensuring effective communication between the AMU, A&E, and the wider hospital. This role provides ample opportunities for professional development with access to ongoing training and mentorship.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 on AMU, you will play a key role in coordinating patient flow and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients with complex, high-acuity needs. You will be responsible for identifying patients requiring multidisciplinary team (MDT) reviews and those needing transfer to other departments. You will work closely with A&E and the Operational Centre, promptly escalating any concerns to ensure smooth transitions in patient care.

Effective communication is essential, and you will regularly liaise with the clinical lead and junior doctors to promote efficient patient flow. Additionally, you will lead the board rounds with consultants twice a day, taking an active role in patient management.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Degree/ Diploma in Nursing
  • Willingness to participate in further professional development and training
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or training in acute care, clinical leadership, or a related specialty
  • Completion of relevant leadership or management courses

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience as a Band 5 nurse in an acute setting (e.g., acute medicine, critical care, emergency department).
  • Proven ability to manage complex patient caseloads, including acutely ill patients.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and supporting junior staff and students.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in change management or quality improvement projects.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills, including the ability to identify and act on deteriorating patients.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, supervise, and motivate a team.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) with patients, families, and healthcare professionals at all levels.
  • Competence in clinical skills relevant to the acute setting (e.g intravenous therapy, ECG, Venepuncture, cannulation, CVD)
  • In-depth knowledge of acute medical conditions and current clinical guidelines.
  • Knowledge of infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding procedures.
Desirable criteria
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance, risk management, and patient safety.
