Job overview

As a Band 3 Clinical Support Worker on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), you will play a vital role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a fast‑paced acute environment. AMU provides rapid assessment, stabilisation, and ongoing care for patients admitted with acute and often complex medical needs. Band 3 CSWs are essential to maintaining safe, effective, and responsive care by carrying out delegated clinical tasks and supporting the multidisciplinary team.

This role requires compassion, strong clinical awareness, good communication, and the ability to work under pressure while ensuring patient dignity, safety, and comfort.

Main duties of the job

 

1. Provide fundamental patient care within the AMU setting

 

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (personal hygiene, mobility, continence care, nutrition, hydration, pressure area care).

2. Undertake delegated clinical tasks (Band 3 responsibility)

National guidance states Band 3 CSWs undertake a range of delegated clinical care duties, such as:

  • Monitoring and recording vital signs (e.g., BP, temperature, pulse, respirations).
  • Blood glucose monitoring.
  • Urinalysis, pregnancy testing.
  • Basic wound care, simple dressings, catheter care.

These tasks extend the Band 2 AMU role and are necessary due to the higher acuity on AMU.

3. Recognise and report patient deterioration

  • Carry out timely clinical observations (NEWS2) and escalate concerns immediately to registered nursing staff.

4. Support Registered Nurses and the Multidisciplinary Team

  • Assist with clinical investigations and treatments appropriate to training level.

5. Maintain high standards of documentation and communication

  • Accurately record care delivered, clinical observations, and changes in patient status.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 3 CSW to join the ward.  the successful candidate  will support registered nursing staff and other health care professionals in the delivery of nursing care to patients at a level determined by training, competence and experience. They will also assist in the maintenance of the care environment and perform housekeeping, clerical, ancillary and portering roles as requested.

NB Postholder should only undertake duties for which training has been received and where relevant, competency based assessment successfully completed. Postholder must make nurses and others aware of any limitations to competence.

Key Responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist in the provision of patient care in accordance with the care plan prescribed by registered nurses. Examples of duties include delivery of hygiene, nutrition and hydration, continence care, pressure area care, mobility, rehabilitation and psychological support.
  2. Assist in the taking of patient’s observations as appropriate to the level of knowledge skills and competence achieved. Record these in accordance with trust and local policies.
  3. Assist healthcare professional with treatment and carry out additional care roles under supervision and as determined by the levels of competence achieved.
  4. Report changes to patient’s condition or health status to registered nurses
  5. Assist in care and support of visitors
  6. Maintain confidentiality in relation to patients’ records working within the principles of Caldicott guidelines

NON CLINICAL REPOSNSIBILITIES

  1. Perform general clerical activities to support the area. These duties will include answering the telephone taking and passing on of messages to the relevant person, filing, keeping patient’s records tidy etc
