Job overview

The Consultant Cardiologist post holder will have a specialist interest in Acute Medicine and work across both Cardiology and Acute Medicine for 10 Programmed Activities per week. An additional PA available subject to negotiation and will include participation in a 1:7 Cardiology hot week on-call. 

Typically, a consultant will spend 7.5 PA’s on Direct Clinical Care (this includes with 1.5 PA’s on Supporting Professional Activities and 1PA for admin plus on call PA commitments.

The trust and the Acute Care Team have a robust program for mentoring the new Consultant appointment including access to NHS Leadership programs and clinical courses. The Acute medical team work on a rotational basis covering Ward 29 –Short stay, AMU and Ambulatory care.

Acute - 5 PA out of 4 is DCC and 1 PA is SPA + Admin.

Cardiology - 5 PA out of 4 is DCC and 1 PA is SPA & Admin

Main duties of the job

Acute

·       Definitive care of patient attendances and admissions

·       To lead the delivery of high quality acute medical intervention to patients in all Acute areas by continued

development of practice in the light of evidence-based clinical standards.

·       To lead the provision of comprehensive medical service to AMU and develop comprehensive plans for patient care in the acute phase, taking active involvement in the management of all unscheduled emergency medical admissions to the Trust.

·       To develop and provide acute medical services to assist in the admission avoidance and early safe discharges strategies of the Trust.

·       To lead and direct the AMU to facilitate substantial reform in the management of emergency medical patients, establishing links with GPs and other consultant staff.

·       To monitor the delivery of emergency medical care to ensure high quality, evidence-based care at all times

·       To ensure safe high quality acute medical intervention including procedures required for patients and is responsive and in line with best practice.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. 

A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Cardiology

·       To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high-quality cardiology service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards.

·       To provide advice to primary and secondary care colleagues in other specialities in relation to cardiac problems and overseeing the internal referrals assessed by junior and specialist cardiac team.

·       To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics provided in both the main outpatients and specialist clinics held within the Clinical Measurement Unit.

·  To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students Postgraduate Medical Education

in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.

·       To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.

·       To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes.

·   To complement non-invasive imaging in addition to overseeing and addressing clinically urgent cardiology reporting within the Clinical Measurement Unit.

·       To develop an interest in coronary interventions.

·       To support the on-going development of services for cardiology in line with the existing programmes for management of coronary heart disease, angina and heart failure liaising with community and primary care services.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register
  • ALS (Adult Life support) within last 3 years
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Cardiology & Medicine (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
  • Must possess a wide experience in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine at senior level
  • Ability to offer expert clinical advice on range of problems
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to act as an effective role model for junior staff.
  • Experience in Acute Medicine

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good organisational and management skills Ability to manage and lead within the Elderly Care Team
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff including SpR/StR level
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
