Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

Post holder will be working as part of the paediatric  diabetes team which includes clinicians , consultants, dietitians and psychology. Working across acute wards, community premises including educational establishments providing care and assessment for children and young peolple presentimng with diabetes

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously in the provision of specialist, evidence-based diabetes care

To provide a high-quality service for Children and Young Peoples with diabetes and their families within a variety of settings, including client’s homes, schools, wards, clinics and other community settings within Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.

To assist in the implementation and adoption of local agreed diabetes policies and guidelines

To maintain Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Standards in all aspects of the job.

Working for our organisation

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades ensure the Trust now has state-of-the-art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be involved in the inpatient care of children and young people with diabetes facilitating safe discharge. 

To be involved with and assist families of newly diagnosed and established diabetes to develop an understanding to maintain a day-to-day management of the condition. 

To be involved in the community care of children and young people with diabetes and their families within a variety of settings, including client’s homes, schools, and other community settings to support them through daily living 

To be involved in the outpatient care of children and young people with diabetes and support them through daily living and times of illness and crisis.

To be involved in supporting young people with diabetes through transition to the as they enter adulthood

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse Child Branch
  • • Degree in Nursing
  • • Documented evidence of professional development in diabetes

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above, working with children with diabetes
  • • Experience of multi-professional working

key competecies

Essential criteria
  • • Clinical experience with management of children with diabetes- inpatient and outpatient
  • • Experience of prioritising work & and managing a caseload
  • Experience caring for patients on insulin pump therapy
