Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from multiple sites covering Walsall. Our multidisciplinary services include rapid response and homebased care, so that those with long term conditions and the frail elderly can remain in their own homes.

Job overview

We are seeking to recruit Band 6 Emergency Care Assessment Practitioner in Walsall Healthcare’s Emergency Department and have opportunities for those with either Nurse or Paramedic background and have previous Emergency Care experience.

Main duties of the job

This new role is being established in the Emergency Department to support the clinical team in carrying out early initial assessments and support patient pathways through ED.  This will be specialising primarily in Triage and Rapid Assessment and Treatment Streams of ED.

 

 

Working for our organisation

You will be developed and supported as part of a new clinical framework established by the ED Matron and ACP Lead, with induction period and clearly defined role descriptor to support your progression in this newly defined role.  You will be expected to be a key figure in the leadership of the Rapid Assessment and Treatment Area of ED, providing a Team of clinicians the clinical support that will determine excellent patient care standards.

It is an exciting opportunity to work within a team that is currently developing options for a New Emergency Department Redevelopment.  The organisation has been awarded £36m to develop a new state of the art Emergency Department and you will have the opportunity to work within this team to provide solutions to new innovative ways of working and contribute to the project.

As an Emergency Department we are committed to provide high quality care within a demanding service by ensuring our nursing team are proactive and have additional clinical skills to provide individualised patient care for the whole range of presenting conditions, in which you will be expected to continually demonstrate in this role.

You must demonstrate excellent communicate skills, initiative, drive and a willingness to learn to expand your knowledge and skills and be willing to contribute to achieving CQC “Outstanding” Status by 2022.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our Department has support of an ED Professional Development Nurse and access to a broad learning environment including courses to increase clinical skills and knowledge this includes ILS/PILS/ TILS/ALS/EPLS /TNCC and in house plaster application course depending on experience. We can offer post registration courses via Wolverhampton University in Emergency care of the child and mentorship. We positively encourage department link nurses and are developing a wide range of departmental champions to promote specialist support within the team.  We aim to recruit new Clinicians that will be keen to work within a Multi-Disciplinary Team to aid Audits and service developments.  In 2019 our department moved forward with their CQC Rating to “Requires Improving” to “Good”; we are now looking for candidates that will join our team to move us further to “Outstanding”.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • ENB 199/ evidence of undertaking recognised equivalent specialised course. (or working towards
  • Evidence of undertaking recognised course of study in teaching and assessing.
  • Educated to degree level or evidence of study at degree level.(or masters level)
  • Registered with HCPC/ NMC
Desirable criteria
  • Emergency Practitioner minor injuries module (LEVEL 6 or 7)
  • Emergency Practitioner minor illness module (level 6 or 7)

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Additional clinical skills eg; x-ray interpretation/ assessment skills/ patient management.
  • Wound assessment/ suturing/ wound management

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of minor injuries / Illness assessment and management.
  • Sound knowledge of Health promotion, accident prevention
