Consultant in Obstetrics
An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecologist to join our team at Walsall Manor Hospital.
The post holder will have specific interest in Uroynaecology and be able to cover all obstetrics and gynaecological emergencies in an on-call role. The post will include resident and non-resident on call duties. Resident cover will be till 17:30 during the week and twice a day during weekend to facilitate twice daily consultant-led ward rounds on labour ward, seven days a week. The consultant on-call is supported by a middle grade level (ST3 or above) and junior trainee.
The applicant must have full GMC registration with licence to practice, MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification, relevant CCT or equivalent (must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of Advisory Appointments Committee) and entry onto GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
THE DIRECTORATE OF OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY
Obstetrics
The Maternity Wing comprises of the labour ward, induction bay, antenatal/ postnatal/ neonatal wards, and medical/midwifery management Offices. We use the electronic BadgerNet system for pregnancy records.
There is a full range of modern equipment with 10 ultrasound-scanning sessions; Computerised CTG monitoring is available in antenatal clinic, fetal day assessment unit, antenatal ward, and maternity triage. Antenatal Clinics and Fetal Day assessment Units are situated within the new building.
Labour Suite comprises of low technology delivery rooms, high risk delivery rooms, a dedicated theatre suite and a backup theatre. All the rooms are equipped with computer for electronic documentation.
There are 5 Maternity Theatre Sessions – Tuesday, Wednesday AM/Friday PM, and Thursday. There are two wards dedicated for obstetric patients - 20-bedded Primrose ward and 12-bedded Foxglove ward. There may be cross flow between these two wards depending upon bed availability.
Walsall Manor Hospital delivers approximately 3800 babies per year. We face many challenges in the complexity of cases that present to the unit. We are part of the Black Country and West Birmingham Local Maternity and Neonatal Services and
closely collaborate with the other three providers within the LMNS. As a Consultant on Labour Ward, you will provide leadership, support, and training for medical and midwifery staff.
Our new midwifery led units has recently opened and accommodates 3 beds for delivery of our low risk patients.
Gynaecology Department
Facilities comprise of a 14-bedded inpatient facility on Ward 23. Gynaecology Assessment Unit is situated on Ward 23, where an ultrasound scan machine is available for emergency patients. Early Pregnancy Assessment service is available here from Monday to Friday – 9 am until 6pm.
The gynaecology theatre suite comprises two operating theatres (12 and 14) complete with anaesthetic and recovery areas and modern anaesthetics equipment and is situated within the new build.
Gynaecology outpatient unit is situated within the new hospital building. Specialist and general outpatient clinics are sited in this facility. Specialist interests include oncology, colposcopy, urogynaecology, menorrhagia, menopause and postmenopausal bleeding, outpatient hysteroscopy and infertility.
Walsall Manor Hospital works collaboratively with other hospitals in the region. I t is part of the black country ICS and high risk and complex cases are referred to various units

· Oncology : PAN Birmingham
· Maternal medicine: West midland regional maternal medicine network and Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
Representative Job Plan
A job plan and work schedule will set out agreed arrangements for how work is organised, where it is located, what in general terms the work comprises and when it is to be performed.
It is expected that the post will consist of a 10 Programmed Activity week including predictable non-resident on-call of 1 in 12. The post holder will need to be prepared to work flexibly to support the clinical requirements of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
When on call you are required to arrive at 8:30 for handover during the week. Weekend resident cover includes 8:30-13.00 and 19:30-21:30 to facilitate consultant-led ward round twice a day, 7 days a week.
You will be expected to perform emergency gynaecological procedures independently whilst on call for gynaecology and be able to maintain and develop surgical skills by routinely having elective surgical lists and gynaecology hot week 1:14. Advice and guidance will be available from other consultants whilst oncall, from oncall consultant for obstetrics and other members in the department, and a buddy system will be put into place initially when commencing the role.
You will be required to undertake a specialist service in Urogyneacology with specialist outpatient cystoscopy and Urogynaecolgoy theatres. Support with MDT and supervise specialist nurse.
Research, Audit and Continuing Professional Development
You will be expected to initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. You will need to manage your programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to meet your needs within the requirements of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
