Job overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Specialist Pharmacist to join our Cancer and Aseptic Services team in Pharmacy. The post-holder will provide clinical pharmacy support to the haematology and oncology multidisciplinary teams. They will offer professional and legal supervision within the aseptic unit, ensuring optimal pharmaceutical care using products manufactured in the aseptic facilities.
The post-holder will have the opportunity to enhance their professional development through various avenues. These include participating in patient-facing clinics alongside consultants, specialist nurses, and pharmacists, attending specialist conferences, and having dedicated time for independent prescribing practice.
This post is open to junior pharmacists who are looking develop within this specialty into a senior pharmacist. These candidates will go through a Step Programme to become a Band 7.

Main duties of the job
Cancer and Aseptic Services:
1. To deliver a comprehensive and consistently high quality aseptic and clinical pharmacy service to the oncology/haematology directorate in order to improve the quality of patient care and to promote evidence based, cost-effective prescribing, in line with departmental procedures.
2. To act as an authorised pharmacist and manage the day-to-day requirements in the provision of a pharmaceutical aseptic service.
3. To undertake a pharmaceutical review of all prescriptions and requests for aseptically prepared products to achieve agreed goals.
4. To provide professional and legal supervision within the Aseptic Services Unit and be responsible for items prepared.
5. To supervise the final product checking and release of unlicensed products by rotational Pharmacists.
6. To be on the delegation logs for clinical trials supported by the pharmacy aseptic unit.
7. Provide professional guidance to junior pharmacists, technicians and students working within the area of speciality.
8. To be responsible for the identification and safe storage of materials before and during manufacture, and for the safe storage of medicinal products after manufacture.
9. Contribute effectively to patient care as part of the multidisciplinary team, by attending ward rounds or other appropriate meetings, in order to make pro-active interventions in individual patients’ therapy and to provide information on drug related issues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
10. Promote optimal and appropriate drug use and high-quality prescribing practice through: implementation of the Joint formulary, medicines management and antimicrobial prescribing initiatives; promotion of key prescribing messages; assisting in the development of prescribing guidelines and care pathways; assisting in the development of essential shared care guidelines and participating in multidisciplinary staff training, which impact across the Trust.
11. To participate in the internal monitoring systems to measure clinical input on the wards and provide such information as may be required, such as intervention monitoring.
12. To investigate complex pharmaceutical problems arising from use of medicinal products and participate in and encourage medical staff in adverse drug reaction reporting.
13. To ensure aseptic facilities are maintained to defined standards of environmental and physical control, in order to maintain the integrity of the product, and to act, in liaison with the Principle Pharmacist and Aseptic Services Manager, in an appropriate manner to resolve any discrepancies.
14. Assist other Senior Pharmacists providing pharmaceutical advice at Directorate level.
15. To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of developments in medical and pharmaceutical practice, as part of their own continuing professional development.
16. Maintaining validated safe work systems and ensuring compliance with MHRA guidelines for "Good Manufacturing Practice" and quality assurance.
17. To support the Chemo Care Pharmacist to develop and maintain a safe electronic prescribing system.
Post-holder will be required to undertake late night, weekend, bank holidays and on-call work on a rota basis.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy
- Completed Pre-Registration year leading to Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Current membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent) or currently studying for it.
- Independent Prescribing
- BOPA SACT Passport
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant clinical pharmacy or hospital pharmacy experience, including work in aseptic units, performing final checks, and releasing aseptically prepared products
- Experience in carrying out audits and projects.
- Experience of successfully supervising and contributing to the training of pharmacists and pharmacy technical staff.
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience in clinically screening and releasing SACT prescriptions
- Able to interpret national guidelines, and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines related to Cancer and Aseptic Services
Desirable criteria
- Broad range of experience of working as a clinical pharmacist, including provision of ‘Out of hours’ Pharmaceutical Services, medicines information and drug utilisation review.
