Job overview
To be an efficient and flexible member of the Histopathology laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of qualified members of staff.
To have responsibility to assist queries within specimen reception cross site within the BCPS, the Hub site is based at Wolverhampton, receiving work from Walsall Manor Hospitals, Russells Hall Hospital Dudley and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital.
Working with Senior BMSs and other staff delivering the day-to-day workflow within the laboratory ensuring adequate resources are in place
To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality
Main duties of the job
To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Medical Laboratory Assistants ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Take part in the specimen entry process using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) (Winpath). Ensure that all samples / request forms are correctly matched and fulfil the specimen acceptance criteria of the Department. Highlight any discrepancies to a senior member of staff
To work with BCPS Cellular Pathology Reception staff and pre and post analytical areas of the Laboratory in accordance with pre-determined policies, procedures, priorities and in the most cost-effective manner whilst maintaining a quality service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To prioritize and plan own workload including to identify and expedite urgent and priority samples and communicate own work priorities within the team.
To be able to accurately enter and retrieve data from the laboratory computer and manual record systems and comply with relevant legislation regarding data protection.
Liaise with other Pathology departments, wards, GPs and other service users regarding non analytical problems with samples. To undertake routine daily maintenance of equipment,
To exercise judgment when dealing with enquiries from other Pathology Dept and users of the laboratory.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE Mathematics and English or equivalent and a basic science based qualification
- IBMS Certificate of competence/ Foundation degree in Biomedical science
Desirable criteria
- Substantial NHS Cellular Pathology laboratory experience in routine laboratory techniques
