Job overview
We are looking for a Band 4 Biomedical Scientist (BMS) who will work within the Sexual Health and HIV service at Embrace Wolverhampton.
As a Biomedical Scientist at Embrace you will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that will achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care. You will be expected to work as part of a team. This work will involve direct contact and communication with the patient and microscopical examination of Gram stained smears and wet preparations.
Main duties of the job
Perform Gram stain and microscopy on the slides brought into the laboratory by the clinical staff, this includes wet preparations; whilst the patient waits.
Record the results of the microscopy in the workbook; the patients test /appointment form, and on the Lillie computer system.
Record if Gram negative diplococci are seen on the slide, on the corresponding request form.
Check that the details on the form match those on the sample before processing or sending to the Microbiology laboratory. Resolve any problems before sending.
On occasion, samples may need to be taken by the BMS to the Microbiology laboratory.
Perform quality control testing when required.
Ordering consumables as required.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE Mathematics and English or equivalent and a basic science based qualification
- IBMS Certificate of competence/ Foundation degree in Biomedical science
- Driving License
Desirable criteria
- Substantial NHS Cellular Pathology laboratory experience in routine laboratory techniques
Experience

- Specimen reception skills demonstrating good communication
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of Clinical governance
