Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a band 6 nurse to join our well established and supportive community team.
You may have been working in respiratory as a band 5 and/or have nursing experience and wish to persue a career in respiratory.
We care for respiratory patients in their place of residence and in clinics within Sandwell.
A main art of our work is admission avoidance and you would be part of a team the responded to urgent referrals and assessed and treated
patients with the aim of avoiding an admission to hopsital.
We care for patients with asthma, COPD, bronchectasis and fibrosis.
We hold oxygen and spirometry clinics and pulmonary rehab classes across the Sandwell borough.
The post holder will be required to work on a rota basis to cover weekends and bank holidays. 
The post holder will require access to a vehicle for work purposes and have a UK licence. 

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist clinical skills of a band 6 nurse within a multi-disciplinary team.

To provide specialist assessment and treatment to patients with respiratory disease within a community setting.

To work independently as an experienced and competent health care professional who will work with others to provide clinical care to those with long term respiratory conditions, enabling individuals to
remain in their place of residence.

Work collaboratively and co-operatively within a multidisciplinary respiratory team to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Be responsible for assessment, treatment and appropriate admissions contributing to the safe management of patients within the community.

To actively participate in clinical professional development by way of regular training, support, clinical reasoning and peer review.

Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
Provide respiratory expertise to colleagues, patients and carers through specialist advice and education.

Assist in providing clinical leadership to Band 5 nurses, physiotherapists, and respiratory support workers within the speciality through supervision, education and service development.

Participate in evidence-based audit and research projects to further practice, making and acting upon recommendations for changes in practice to improve service delivery including the formulation and
implementation of the service protocols.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a team we care for patients with COPD, Asthma, ILD and Bronchiectasis. We also provide a service for long covid patients. You will work with this group of patients. 

Sandwell's home oxygen service (Sandwell HOS-AR) is incorporated within the team as well as pulmonary rehab.

We also provide OT and dietetic services and breathlessness and BPD management.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of practice in respiratory care
  • Current registration with NMC
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate course related to respiratory care
  • Spirometry accredited course
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post graduate experience
  • Recent experience in respiratory care in either an acute or community setting
  • Leadership skills
Desirable criteria
  • Spirometry procedure and interpretation
  • Relevant course in respiratory disease
  • Capillary and /or arterial blood gas sampling
  • Able to interpret blood gases and prescribe oxygen accordingly
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Use of motivational interviewing
