Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to take on the role of Deputy Group Director of Operations for Surgical Services to join an ambitious and forward-thinking NHS Trust at the heart of Birmingham and the Black Country. 

 In this pivotal position, you will drive operational performance, support service transformation, and lead improvements across a broad range of surgical specialties including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, and Emergency Surgery. Working in partnership with clinical and operational leaders, you will help shape high-quality, efficient and patient-focused services as part of our triumvirate leadership model.

Main duties of the job

As Deputy Group Director of Operations – Surgical Services, you will:

  •           Lead the delivery of safe, effective, and high-performing surgical services across key specialties.
  •          Drive transformation initiatives including theatre optimisation, outpatient redesign, and improved patient flow.
  •          Champion the adoption of innovative technologies, including robotic-assisted surgery.
  •          Collaborate with senior leaders to embed a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  •          Support financial sustainability through strategic resource planning and cost improvement initiatives
  •       Provide strong, visible leadership to empower teams and enhance staff experience and engagement

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or evidence of working at that level
  • Management qualification, MBA/Masters Level or equivalent or willingness to work toward

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant/ general / broad/ management experience within the NHS with, responsibility for operational matters including, staff management, budgetary responsibility, performance targets, waiting list management, discharge arrangements.
  • Proven experience of service development.
  • Proven experience of change management ability
  • Experience of leading projects.
Desirable criteria
  • Some management experience within a surgical services or theatre environment
