Beyond our clinical work, we also support our graphic design and animation teams with non‑clinical photography and videography—making this a rich and varied role where your creativity can shine.
Main duties of the job
What the Role Involves
As a Clinical Photographer, you will:
- Accurately capture clinical stills and video both in clinic, on wards, and in a fully equipped studio
- Produce high-standard clinical and non‑clinical imagery for education, publication, research and patient care
- Use your judgement to interpret complex request forms and deliver appropriate imaging across specialist areas
- Communicate confidently about consent, confidentiality, copyright, image security, and patient preferences
- Provide expert advice to clinicians on the best imaging techniques for clinical assessment
You’ll be based at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, but you will also work regularly at:
- Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust
- The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust
- Any other site where we provide our services
Because this is a multi‑site role, a full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle is essential, all travel costs to other sites are reimbursed.
You will also participate in our emergency on‑call rota—approximately one week every 3 months—receiving appropriate standby and overtime payments.

The ideal candidate will have:
Essential
- BSc in Medical Illustration or equivalent
OR - A Photography degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography
- AHCS registration
- A strong, current portfolio showcasing your skills
- Excellent Photoshop and general IT skills
- Outstanding communication abilities
- A full UK driving licence and access to your own transport
Desirable
- At least 6 months post‑qualification experience in medical photography
- Professional membership of the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI)

- BSc in Medical Illustration Or Degree or HND in Photography with Graduate Certificate in Clinical Photography
- Registered Medical Illustration Practitioner [RMIP] AHCS registered
- Full professional membership of Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI)
Desirable criteria
- City & Guilds Certificate in Diabetic Retinal Screening
Experience/Skills
Essential criteria
- Be able to demonstrate a wide range of experience in both clinical and non clinical illustration / photography techniques
- Detailed knowledge and applied skills of clinical illustration including intra-oral, and Fundus photography.
- Detailed knowledge of legislation pertaining to clinical photography, in particular consent, copyright, data protection and NHS corporate ID
- Advanced knowledge of digital imaging capture, manipulation and output.
- Interpret clinical request forms and use appropriate views to illustrate the condition
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates current photography involvement, either clinical or non-clinical
- Experience of video capture and processing and output using digital non-linear editing systems
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
