Job overview

We are looking to recruit BANK Catering Assistant/Stores staff to work in our in-house ‘Central Food Production Unit’ where we prepare and cook circa 48,000 Patient meals per week, serving 10 hospitals through a 'cook-chill' operation. The focus of duties will be to assist the team in/across the following areas and full training will be given to successful applicants;

- Assist in the receipt of goods into the CPU Storage and distribution of food within the CPU and onward to all wards and other sites. Distribution is delivering food pods around the hospital site using a vehicle

- Food preparation duties. Helping to prepare recipe ingredients for cooking

- Food production duties assisting the Chefs/Cooks, 'Packaging of finished meals' and 'Picking and packing' ward orders through to 'Cleaning duties' and 'General CPU tasks'.

The CPU is operational between 7.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. Candidates must be available for work over/ during these times.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate would have the following skills/experience /qualifications;

- Preferably, but not essential, a formal practical food qualification or associated food operational experience Food Safety Level 2 food hygiene qualification would be desirable but not essential

- Previous experience of working in a large scale and busy food production environment.

- Working in a variety of departments and able to work under pressure

- Be physically fit and used to/able to work on your feet for the duration of your shift

- Be able to work in cold environments

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work as a member of the CPU team to assist with the preparation and packing of all food items.

 To provide routine information with colleagues within the CPU, ward staff and delivery staff.

To make judgements involving straightforward facts or situations, eg, investigate problems with delivery shortages, reporting equipment failure and stock issues.

To organise your own day to day work tasks or activities to ensure meal delivery times are achieved for Trust patients and external customers.

To comply with all Trust Policies, Food Hygiene Regulations and Health and Safety requirements.

To ensure safe use, and cleanliness, of all catering equipment required - eg. slicing machines, sealing machines, mixers etc. – following CPU standard operating procedures.

To explain and demonstrate own duties to new starters.

To monitor and report on stock levels and ensuring that these are correctly stored in line with HACCP.

To record personally generated information for HACCP compliance to ensure Food Safety Regulations are followed.

To participate in cleanliness audits of the CPU, and Trust surveys.

To work within clearly defined procedures using own initiative on routine matters, with supervision available.

To wear full uniform as issued and maintain personal appearance and hygiene at a standard commensurate with the duties and role of the post.

Essential criteria
  • Knowlege of basic food hygiene
  • Knowledge of COSHH
  • Knowledge of procedures, systems and regulations gained through equivalent experience
  • Experience of employment in a catering/food environment
  • Ability to understand and record HACCP documentation
  • Understanding of Health & Safety regulations in a catering environment
