Advanced Colonoscopy Fellow (ATSM Fellow)

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Registrar

Job overview

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated doctor to join The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust as an ATSM Fellow in Colonoscopy (Senior Clinical Fellow – ST6/7 equivalent). The post forms part of the national Advanced Training Skills Module (ATSM) programme and is designed to support clinicians who are progressing toward advanced colonoscopy and polypectomy practice, with a long‑term aim of becoming an accredited BCSP Colonoscopist.

The successful applicant will work within our high‑performing Endoscopy Unit at New Cross Hospital, with additional activity at Cannock Chase Hospital. The role provides five colonoscopy sessions per week, including two supervised advanced training lists and three independent lists, allowing consolidation of complex polypectomy skills. The Fellow will also play a key role in coordinating the polyp MDT, contributing to colorectal cancer pathways, and supporting governance, audit and service development work within the department.

This is a full‑time 12‑month fixed‑term Medical & Dental training fellowship, funded nationally. Applicants must hold full GMC registration, possess (or be close to achieving) JAG certification for independent colonoscopy, and demonstrate a clear commitment to a future career within advanced endoscopy and the NHS. Higher specialty trainees (ST6+), post‑CCT clinicians, and experienced specialty doctors with the required skill level are welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Undertake five colonoscopy lists per week, including:

  • Two supervised ATSM training lists focused on advanced polypectomy
  • Three independent colonoscopy lists

Lead and coordinate the Polyp MDT, working with administrative, pre‑assessment and referring teams to ensure timely and safe progression of patients through the pathway.

Attend and contribute to the Colorectal Cancer MDT.

Complete a bi‑annual audit of the large polyp service and present findings at relevant departmental or divisional meetings.

Participate in clinical governance, audit, service improvement and research activities in line with departmental and ATSM requirements.

Undertake additional clinical duties appropriate to the postholder’s skill set, which may include:

  • Capsule endoscopy
  • Specialist clinics
  • Inpatient gastroenterology reviews
  • Involvement in Midlands Endoscopy Training Academy (META) teaching and workshops

Work to JAG endoscopy standards, Trust policies, and all regulatory requirements.

Contribute to education and training within the Endoscopy Department, including supporting junior medical staff where appropriate.

Maintain high standards of patient care, communication, documentation, and professionalism consistent with Trust values and GMC guidance.
