Job overview

To be an efficient and flexible member of the Histopathology laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of qualified members of staff.

To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality

To receive specimens into the department from 4 hospital sites, Royal Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital, Dudley Russells Hall Hospital, Walsall Manor Hospital and Sandwell and West Birmingham hospital.

Assisting with CELLNASS uplift.

Management of block/slide filing system to aid in better patient management

Assist with consumable distribution

To participate in ‘pot washing’ of empty containers for re-use and distribution back to all hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Biomedical Scientists (BMS 1 and above) ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Ensure that all procedures carried out contribute to high quality service provision.

To receive, sort and organise pathological samples sent from a variety of sources including Operating Theatres, Out Patient Clinics and General Practitioners for investigation. Receive and scan relevant tracking form documentation on a regular basis for proof of sample receipt.

Take part in the specimen entry process using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) (Winpath). Ensure that all samples / request forms are correctly matched and fulfil the specimen acceptance criteria of the Department. Highlight any discrepancies to a senior member of staff.

Retrieve patient results from the LIMS or alternative portal as required.

Deal with patients and visitors to the Department in a courteous and efficient manner.

Deal with telephone enquiries in an efficient and professional manner.

Accept deliveries from Suppliers as required.
