Job overview
This is a 10 Programmed Activity (PA) post including on-call duties. The ICU consultant oncall is 1 in 9. The consultant intensivists provide a dedicated 24/7 ICM service to the Trust.
The oncall staffing team comprises of a Consultant, Registrar, Core Trainee and ACCP.
The ICU is very well staffed.
It comprises of two ICU consultants daytime (0800hrs to 1800hrs) with the support of at least one Anaesthetic Registrar, one Anaesthetic Core Trainee and one ACCP. There are usually other PGDIT from Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Teaching Fellows undertaking training modules.
In addition, there are 4 dedicated ICU CESR Fellows who are being guided to achieve GMC Specialist Registration and Advanced ICU Trainees undertaking their six-month attachments
Main duties of the job
1a) In conjunction with the ICM Clinical Lead, ICCU Matron, ICM Consultants and other colleagues, contribute to the provision of a 24/7 consultant led service in Intensive Care Medicine as part of the Critical Care Services Directorate according to those agreed in the Job Plan.
1b) In conjunction with Consultant colleagues participate in the provision of an out of hours (on-call) consultant Intensive Care Medicine service for the Directorate and Trust. This includes being on-call for immediate return to NXH, telephone advice and major incidents.
2. To provide cover for Consultant and other colleagues in respect of periods for annual, study and professional and other leave.
3. To deputise for absent colleagues (such as for sickness leave), as far as is practicable.
4. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.
5. To develop & maintain such special skills, competencies and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development in Intensive Care Medicine as agreed at job planning & appraisal (Personal Development Plan). In conjunction with Consultant and other colleagues, to take part in Quality Improvement activity including audit and research as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To support and provide teaching and training of junior medical staff, post graduate medical education and clinical technologists.
2. To provide specialist advice and skills training to colleagues from other disciplines as required for the optimum delivery of patient care.
3. To develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate, where appropriate, in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
4. To develop and maintain good communications with General Medical (and Dental) Practitioners and appropriate outside agencies.
5. To ensure one’s own practice is up-to-date, including taking responsibility for own Continuing Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance Review.
6. To maintain registration with and the professional standards and obligations set out by the General Medical Council.
7. To participate in an annual Appraisal and Job Plan review.
Person specification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience in Intensive Care Medicine as evidenced by: - 1) Completion of Stage 3 training in ICM with FFICM by examination or equivalent (as assessed by the FICM Equivalence Committee), with affiliate Fellowship of the Faculty of ICM or 2) Possess (or would be eligible) for the Fellowship by Assessment FFICM or Associate Fellowship (AFICM) of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
