NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Due to our previous Fellows advancing into consultant positions within the NHS, applications are invited for Senior Clinical Fellows in Gastroenterology.

The posts are suitable for those wish to acquire a general and specialist gastroenterology experience and candidates are expected to have GI experience and preferably a postgraduate GI qualification.

Each Fellow will have an educational and clinical supervisor who will oversee their training.

Main duties of the job

There will be expectation to participate on an in-patient rota, which includes GI ward cover and seeing GI referrals from other departments/acute medical unit. The successful candidates will also form part of weekend working on pro rota basis, which will mainly include in-patient GI cover, but may expand to endoscopy/clinic working in future.  There is no general medical rota commitment as a part of this job, but opportunities can be discussed with interested candidates where the individuals portfolio would require this.

Working for our organisation

The successful candidate will be supported throughout their placement affording a dedicated, supervised, flexible and high-quality training which would be tailored to the individual. The duration of tenure will allow a comprehensive assessment of the trainee’s abilities in order to set up and deliver personalized training with an aim to enhance the overall training experience for our fellow within the programme. There will be opportunity for fellows to progress to Advanced Clinical Fellow role (ACF) and support will be provided for interested candidates who wish to pursue CESR pathway for specialist registration. The Trust has one of the most comprehensive CESR support Programmes in the country.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The gastroenterology department regularly has MTI fellows and CFs (SCF, ACF) who wish to acquire a  general and specialist gastroenterology experience. This opportunity has risen due to our recent  fellows advancing in their career as consultants now.

The candidates for SCF post are expected to have GI experience, and preferably a postgraduate GI qualification. This post is at a specialist registrar equivalent level. SCF fellows, new to NHS, will be
accommodated initially at senior IMT (internal medical trainee level) to acclimatise to new health care system. Their responsibilities have been outlined later.

After a period of observation (approximately 3 months), a personalised, specialist job plan will be created for each fellow depending on their level of experience and their areas of particular interest.  This plan will seek to balance the needs of the fellow against the requirements of the department but the anticipation is that each fellow will have access to at least one gastroenterology out-patient clinic (increasing to 2-3 clinics with time) and at least one endoscopy session per week (with opportunities
to attend more sessions depending on availability).

SCF will be allocated independent endoscopy lists (with indirect supervision) in due course, depending upon their training and progression. These sessions will be flexible and depending on the ability and progress of each trainee, additional sessions will be negotiated and agreed upon. Their will be expectation to participate in in-patient rota, which includes GI ward cover and seeing GI referrals from other departments/acute medical unit.

Fellows will also make part of weekend working on pro rota basis, which will mainly include in-patient GI cover, but may expand to endoscopy/clinic working in future. There is no general medical rota commitment
as a part of this job, but opportunities can be discussed with interested candidates.

Each fellow will have an educational and clinical supervisor who will oversee their training. Such supervision will be in line with the ST programme.
