Job overview

Join the largest acute medical consultant team in the South West

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative consultant to join the largest acute medical consultant team in the South West at North Bristol NHS Trust. This is a full-time role (10 PAs), but we are open to part-time or job-share arrangements for the right candidate.

With 18 acute medical consultants, our team is leading transformational change in service delivery, with patient care and safety at the heart of everything we do. We believe the AMU is the hub of the hospital and are looking for a consultant who is excited by the challenge of driving forward timely, safe, and effective care in a busy, high-pressure environment. If you are passionate about innovation and are ready to embrace new ways of working, we want to hear from you!

Our AMU includes an Acute Medical Triage area where we receive patients directly from the community (40% of the medical intake); a well-developed Enhance Care Unit, where we provide NIV, HFNO and high-level care; and an embedded short stay function. 40% of patients are discharged directly from AMU, with our average length of stay being 48 hours.

We run a mature SDEC providing cross-specialty admission avoidance, seeing on average 40 patients a day. We have a separate Acute Frailty Unit run by the frailty team.

Main duties of the job

You will join our multi-disciplinary acute medicine team delivering consultant led acute medical care for all of the patients presenting with medical problems to North Bristol NHS Trust. As part of the consultant rota, you will be responsible for running and supervising the acute take, SDEC, the enhanced care unit, and AMU. You will have job planned time for administration and supporting professional activities and will have plenty of opportunity to get involved in quality improvement and service development.

Working for our organisation

We are based in the north of the vibrant and culturally rich city of Bristol. The city centre is just 15 minutes away, offering a fantastic array of shops, theatres, restaurants, and social opportunities. Our Trust has teaching status and strong academic links with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, providing ample opportunities for career development.

In addition:

- We provide a flexible, innovative working environment where individual needs are considered, and work/life balance is prioritised.

- We welcome overseas applicants and those who wish to explore different ways of working.

- There will be a supplement for out-of-hours working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Consultant in Acute Medicine, you will:

- Lead the diagnosis and clinical management of patients presenting to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Southmead Hospital.

- Provide regular ward rounds and clinical support to patients, alongside the junior medical team, ensuring high standards of patient care.

- Collaborate closely with colleagues across specialties to ensure a cohesive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

- Participate fully in the Acute Medicine rota, including early and late shifts, weekend cover (1 in 8 for 1 WTE), and Same Day Emergency Care shifts.

- Actively promote the work of the Acute Medical Unit and support Trust priorities around improving patient flow and reducing admissions.

- Be involved in teaching, audit, governance, and research within the AMU.

- Provide professional supervision and mentorship to junior medical staff, contributing to their development and the overall educational environment of the unit.
