Applications are invited from exceptional candidates to join the Breast team at North Bristol NHS Trust as a substantive Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust and Weston General Hospital.  This exciting opportunity is available due to a significant investment in our service and gives opportunity to deliver clinical activity across both Southmead and Weston General sites as part of our excellent consultant surgical team.

Main duties of the job

Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon

This post is subject to Royal College approval 

The Bristol Breast Care Unit was created in 2013 by the amalgamation of all breast care service for the whole of Bristol on one site.  In April 2020, the Unit  amalgamated with the breast services in Weston General Hospital. It is now one of the biggest units in the country serving a population of over 500,000 people.  The unit diagnoses over 1000 breast cancers per annum, operating on close to 1200 patients each year. 

The Bristol Breast Care Centre hosts the Avon Breast Screening Programme which is one of the largest screening programmes in the country.

The MDT includes a dedicated  specialist nursing service who coordinate care pathways for patients diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, as well as a plastic surgery team, specialist breast psychology and enhanced recovery/therapy team. There is a dedicated bi-weekly oncoplastic MDM and a weekly benign MDM.

Oncology services are provided by the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre.

There are close links with the University of Bristol and we are active in recruitment to breast cancer trials, supported by our own research team.

The clinical team consists of 9 substantive Consultant Breast Radiologists, 2 Breast Clinicians and 2 Consultant Radiographers. Our Surgical team has 9 Substantive Breast Surgeons including a clinical academic professor, 2 Nurse Practitioners and a team of excellent junior doctors.

Weston General Hospital is 25 miles away from Bristol with the Breast Service comprising of clinics (new patient, follow up, results and oncology) and theatres as well as support from 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists and full admin/secretarial provision.

Our acute services moved into a brand new, state of the art, hospital building in May 2014. This new 850 bed facility at the Southmead site offers patients single rooms with en-suite facilities, greatly improving privacy and dignity and reducing the spread of infections.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

(i)    Clinical Duties

Diagnosis and management of Breast patients at NBT (Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital). 
Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in partnership with consultant colleagues and the MDT. 

The postholder will be expected, in addition to the operating sessions in their timetable, to also utilise operating sessions of colleagues when they are away, when this is possible. 

(ii)    Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. If appropriate, the postholder will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers. 

Teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as requested by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education are required, as is a contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continual medical education activity locally.

(iii)    Study & Research

The postholder will be entitled to 30 days study leave within a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Service.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The postholder will be required to fulfil the requirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil the requirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council.

The postholder will not necessarily be expected to undertake research however opportunities do exist, and encouragement is given to develop collaborative projects with other departments within Trust or with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The post-holder will be required to submit all research development plans which have resource implications to the Clinical Director prior to implementation.

There are professionally staffed Medical Libraries in the Medical Postgraduate Centre at both Weston General Hospital and Southmead Hospitals, with a rapid service between these and the University Library situated in the centre of Bristol city. A computer literature search facility is available, and the library has links with other networks. The libraries are at the forefront of developments in electronic knowledge delivery.

(iv)    Revalidation
The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process. 

(v)    Support and Office Facilities
The new post holder will have access to a “hot-desk” in the Breast Unit, an office in WGH and full support from a team of admin and clerical staff. 
All consultants in the department will offer clinical and professional support to the appointee and decision making is supported through an oncology MDT and an oncoplastic MDT. A professional mentor will be provided for the appointee.

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria
  • Maintain Full Registration with the GMC
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via 1) CCT or CESR (CP) or proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview. 2) CESR 3) European Community rights
  • An appropriate Higher surgical qualification – FRCS or equivalent level
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working on an onco-plastic breast unit

Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of nine years’ postgraduate experience including five higher surgical training, three years of basic surgical training in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of Breast conditions.
  • Sound operative and clinical skills compatible with the above.
Desirable criteria
  • Onco-plastic experience and skills

Further Training, Management, Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit project and written up
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a general management course or programme

Research, Teaching, Publications

  • Proven teaching ability

  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
  • Evidence of interest in clinical teaching and mentoring.
