There will be a single face-to-face interview with members of the ICU team and an academic representative from the University of Birmingham. This will most likely be during the first two weeks of November 2025. Exact date and details to be confirmed. The programme officially commences on 8th December 2025.
The first two years of training are supernumerary. Once qualified (at the end of Year 2), the post-holder will be required to work shifts on the on-call medical resident rota, including nights and weekends.

Main duties of the job
- Work flexibly and in conjunction ICU consultants and other medical staff to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to critically ill patients
- Obtain, evaluate and synthesise information from physiological assessment, patient history and diagnostic tests, identifying and prioritising relevant problems
- Use clinical decision making to initiate appropriate management plans / treatments
- Learn the necessary skills to undertake initial assessment, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients wherever they may be in the hospital
- Be cognisant of the boundaries and limitations of the ACCP role, referring patients appropriately to other healthcare professionals when appropriate
- Successfully complete a Non-Medical Prescribers course, and prescribe drugs, infusions and blood products within the appropriate scope of practice
- Perform practical procedures common to the critical care environment, including but not limited to: peripheral and central venous access, arterial puncture and cannulation; assistance with chest drainage, tracheostomy insertion, lumbar puncture, ascitic drainage, or sampling from the abdominal or pleural cavities
- Order laboratory and radiological tests, and blood products for transfusion
- Work in accordance with all relevant Infection Control practices and policies
- Obtain and maintain ALS provider status by undertaking a recognised Resuscitation Council course

Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Professional qualification (nursing, physiotherapy, paramedic or pharmacist) and registration with relevant professional governing body (NMC, HPC, GPhC etc)
- Eligible to undertake Non-Medical Prescribing
- Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2:2 classification)
Desirable criteria
- Advanced Life Support (or Trauma) Provider Certificate
- Possession of, or working towards, a Master’s level qualification
- Recognised post-registration qualifications in critical care (or working towards)
Work Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Recent (within 3 years) and appropriate (minimum 3 years) experience in critical care practice
- Evidence of enhanced critical care knowledge and relevant clinical skills
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of involvement with audit and Clinical Governance with significant contribution to a healthcare Quality Improvement Project
- Evidence of multi-professional teaching experience
- Experience in Neurosciences and trauma critical care, including the care of post-operative neurosurgical patients and critically-injured major trauma patients
Skills/Ability
Essential criteria
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to speak fluent English to an appropriate standard
- Demonstrate leadership skills in complex and dynamic situations
