Job overview
The Decontamination Department is responsible for cleaning, decontamination, sterilisation, and servicing of surgical and endoscopy equipment.
Main duties of the job
• To participate in the provision of a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.
• The daily production activity of the Decontamination Department, staff performance and supervision.
• To always work in accordance with the department Standard Operating Procedures and the Quality Management System
• To perform a full range of decontamination duties and be accountable for work area within department.
• Manages Decontamination records in own area of work.
• Interprets and reviews technical data and production reports.
• Provide a high quality and timely service to all customers.
• Supervise, organise, allocate work and manages rota
• To assist with the development of the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures in accordance with Quality Management Systems and ensure staff compliance to them.
• Plan your own workload and work with minimal managerial direction.
• The post holder is expected to deputise for the Decontamination Production Manager in their absence.
The role routinely involves exposure to blood and body fluids.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Department Management:
• Accountable for the department in the absence of senior leaders and deputise in their absence (A)
• Co-ordinate the day-to-day activities across the whole department, prioritise and allocate work as required to ensure an efficient and quality driven service (R) & (A)
• Enable team leaders to carry out their duties and ensure they support less experienced/qualified staff (A) & (S)
• Ensure everyone works in accordance with Departmental Policies and Quality Management Systems to ensure compliance by all (A)
• Assist in the development and regular review of Standard Operating Procedures and Department’s policies, procedures & guidance (S)
• Apply standards to the re-processing of re-usable medical devices, including disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, checking, assembly, despatch and tracking in a controlled environment. (R) & (A)
• Manage and update decontamination records including staff records i.e. sickness, leave, payroll and training, etc. (R)
• Undertake QA/QC testing in compliance with QMS and National Guidance (R) & (A)
• Supervise, record and analyse the operation of the decontamination equipment ensuring routine tests are completed in accordance with Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedules, Quality Standards and Guidance. (R) & (A)
• Co-ordinate the processing and return of loan sets, ensuring that Instructions for use are followed and that Decontamination certificates are supplied on return, (R) & (A)
• Co-ordinate repairs/maintenance of all equipment (R)
• Monitor and control the stocks of raw materials and take appropriate action on any deficiencies and assist in the evaluation of new products. (R) & (A)
• Manage and undertake investigations into non-conformance reports as required (R)
• Ensure safe working practices and regulations are always adhered to (A)
• Speak up, escalate and seek advice/support with any issues that can’t be dealt with there and then.
• Raise concerns/opportunities for improvement and assist with implementation (R)
• Assist with the development of the Department's Quality Policy, Quality Manual and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that a high standard of work is maintained (S)
• Understand data protection and Caldicott issues relating to the use and storage of patient information. (I)
• Undertake and document the results of the Department’s audits. (R) & (A)
• Responsible for ensuring that all staff provide effective, safe and efficient collection, decontamination (manual cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation) and distribution of all re-usable medical devices including flexible endoscopes for use in direct patient care. (R) & (A)
• Competent to undertake effective and compliant decontamination of medical devices in all areas if required (S)
• Plan and deliver own workload with limited supervision (R)
• Work in co-operation with all departments to provide a flexible, responsive, timely and efficient service (R) & (A)
People Leadership:
• Responsible for all aspects of staff supervision incl. performance management, development, appraisal conversations, absence management, Welcome Back Conversations (Return to Work), Wellbeing conversations, conduct and behaviours, etc. (R) & (A)
• Responsible for preparation and management of staff rotas in liaison with the other Co-ordinators and Team Leaders to always ensure reliable service provision (R) & (A)
• Communicate with all colleagues in a polite, respectful and helpful manner, seeking advice from Decontamination Quality Manager/Production Manager where required (R) and (A)
• Ensure that Trust Values are adhered to by all staff and positively role model and manage behaviours to ensure that all staff feel included, respected and are safe when on duty (R) & (A)
• Maintain a portfolio of evidence of competence and CPD activities for self and team (R) & (A)
• Able to train others on the decontamination IT systems to the authorised guidelines and protocols, verification of data, input of data, and staff information as required. (S)
• Responsible for communication of all relevant information i.e. updates, handovers, huddles, escalation, etc. (R)
• Organise, attend and actively participate in the Department’s meetings (R)
• Encourage colleagues to contribute towards process improvement ideas for the department (A)
