Job overview
The Parking Attendant plays a key role in ensuring a safe, well managed, and customer focused parking environment across Trust sites. As part of the wider Security & Parking Team, the Attendant will provide visible support within all parking areas, ensuring compliance with the Trust’s parking policies and helping patients, staff, and visitors.
This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to remain calm and professional, and a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service. The Parking Attendant will carry out regular patrols, issue parking charge notices in accordance with Trust policy, support traffic flow, and contribute towards creating a safe and positive experience for everyone accessing the site.
The post involves outdoor working in all weather conditions and requires a good level of physical fitness.
Main duties of the job
Working conditions
• The post is based at Southmead Hospital with onsite working required.
Physical effort
• Moderate physical effort in using a computer, lifting and filing paperwork.
• Daily role is a combination of sitting, standing, and walking, handling documents and information.

• Frequent requirement to concentrate and make decisions in a fast-paced working environment.
• Requirement to concentrate in a busy department.
• Strict management of personal information, keys and vehicle logging.
• Potential for interruptions to work which may require immediate response.
Emotional effort
• Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.
• The role involves a high level of interaction with other parties both in person, electronically and by telephone which can lead to conflict within an environment of negotiation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Parking & Traffic Management
• Provide a visible, uniformed presence across all Trust parking areas.
• Carry out regular foot and vehicle patrols of car parks and access roads.
• Support traffic flow during peak periods, including assisting with queue management.
• Enforce Trust parking policy, including the issuing of Parking Charge Notices (PCNs).
• Support vehicle access for emergency services and essential operational vehicles.
• Assist with car park and bay closures, including event based or emergency closures.
Customer Service
• Provide directions, advice, and assistance to patients, staff, and visitors.
• Maintain a calm and empathetic approach in highly emotive or stressful situations.
• Communicate clearly and professionally, including with individuals who may be distressed, confused, or have specific needs.
Operational Duties
• Assist with fault reporting for pay and display machines, barriers, and ANPR systems.
• Support cash collection duties when required (where applicable).
• Maintain accurate records using digital reporting tools and handheld devices.
• Report incidents, hazards, and breaches of policy to Supervisors/Managers promptly.
• Work collaboratively with Security Officers when needed, including joint patrols.
Health, Safety & Compliance
• Follow all Trust policies, including Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, and Infection Prevention and Control.
• Identify risks and escalate appropriately.
• Comply with mandatory training and participate in relevant development opportunities.
General Requirements
• Work unsupervised across varying shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
• Maintain excellent levels of attendance, punctuality, and professionalism.
• Undertake any reasonable management requests aligned with the role.

Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good standard of written and spoken English (GCSE or equivalent)
- Computer literacy, including Word, Excel, Outlook
- Full, valid UK driving licence (Category B)
Desirable criteria
- Valid SIA Licence (Security Industry Authority)
Work Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience dealing with the public in a customer-facing role
- Experience handling conflict or dealing with challenging behaviour
- Experience working outdoors or in physically demanding roles
