The post would suit trainees in Geriatric or Palliative medicine seeking to develop an interest in neuro-palliative care, or any of the individual neurology sub-specialties mentioned above. Alternatively, applications would be welcomed from candidates able to perform at registrar-grade who are in possession of full MRCP(UK), and who may be contemplating a career in Neurology, and are interested in developing the palliative care aspects of their skill set. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the development of a wider neuro-palliative care program, while gaining experience of neuro-palliative care with particular focus on Parkinson’s disease, MS and dementia. This program of work will sit within a wider “ageing well” program and be integrated across primary and secondary care and include some community working with supervision. As such, there will be opportunity to achieve many of the curriculum targets for trainees, including movement disorders, palliative care and community working and we anticipate this year being accredited for training, if desired. |
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will:
- Take an active role in the delivery of an “ageing well” programme, focusing on neurological disease (PD, Dementia, neuromuscular disease).
- Support allied health professionals in service delivery, for example with advance care planning or review of clinical symptoms.
- Contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings and develop a deep understanding of MDT working.
- Assist the development of integrated patient pathways.
- Evaluate service development work (may include patient consent, data handling).
- Take part in research and quality improvement programmes.
- Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training across disciplines and specialties.
Working for our organisation
Geriatric Medicine is a dynamic department within the Medicine Division and has a strong focus on delivering high quality acute medical care of the frail older patient from admission through to discharge. The department oversees a bed base of around 200, approximating to a quarter of all trust inpatient capacity. These beds are located in an acute frailty admissions unit, short stay frailty ward, inpatient Complex Care wards and step-down transitional care facilities based on the Southmead site.
The department runs clinics in general geriatric medicine and falls, Parkinson’s disease and enhanced pre-operative medical assessment on the Southmead site. At our satellite Cossham centre, we run a rapid access assessment clinic to support admission avoidance. Most recently we have developed an integrated palliative care service for people with Parkinson’s disease, which feeds into a multi-disciplinary meeting held jointly with colleagues at St Peter’s hospice, Weston Hospice and UHBW.
The medical team consists of 22 substantive consultants and approximately 45 junior doctors at any one time, supported by multiple advanced nurse practitioners, physician associates and therapists. This wider team has increased its emergency zone presence during the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing an acute frailty admissions unit, but we continue to deliver downstream inpatient care to frail and complex patients through the pathway through to discharge.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post has not received specific Royal College or Postgraduate approval for training and is expected to attract trainees seeking Out of Programme Experience (OOPE). However previous post holders have successfully applied to the RCP for time to count towards training.
The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in geriatric medicine, palliative care, neurology sub-specialties (Parkinson’s disease, MS and dementia) service development & quality improvement.
This post will involve work across multiple divisions (Medicine, NMSK & ASCR), with an overall governance responsibility to the Medicine Division.

Teaching
The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.
The post holder may be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP(UK) or MRCPI
- Valid Advanced Life Support Certification
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC
Desirable criteria
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

- Good written and oral communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.

Work experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience and familiarity with UK or Ireland hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 4 years postgraduate experience in an approved training post, or equivalent
- Adequate training and experience in diagnosis and treatment of acute and general medical conditions
Desirable criteria
- Experience or training in general geriatric medicine and falls, Parkinson’s disease and enhanced pre-operative medical assessment
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Evidence of recent CME and training progression at this stage of career
- Experience in conducting and writing up quality improvement projects

- Proven track record in research
