Job overview
This is a non-training post but the Clinical Fellows will get wide ranging clinical experience, supervised by consultant medical staff.
All rotations are planned to give a variety of acute and specialty work. They consist of rotations of 2-4 month durations in various specialties across the division of medicine and in stroke and neurology. These may include: Acute Medicine, Care of the Elderly (acute and step down), Infectious diseases and haematology, gastroenterology and endocrine, cardiology, General and Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Neurology or Stroke medicine.
Clinical fellows will participate in the medical on call rota, which includes ‘acute blocks’ on AMU, nights, late shifts and weekends.

Main duties of the job
Working for our organisation
The Division of Medicine includes the Emergency Department and has 418 beds in the state of the art hospital. Specialty focused wards cover Cardiology, Coronary Care, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases and HIV, Care of the Elderly and Gastroenterology.
The Department of Medicine operates an active postgraduate programme with weekly journal clubs and clinical governance meetings. All the professionals allied to the Department are involved in postgraduate meetings.
The Neurology and Stroke departments sit within the state-of-the-art Regional Neurosciences Centre including Neurosurgery, dedicated Neuropathology, Neuroradiology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuropsychiatry, and Neuropsychology. Since May 2023, the Stroke department at Southmead Hospital takes all acute stroke presentations for the entire population of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, along with regional provision of 24/7 Mechanical Thrombectomy to the wider Severn Region and beyond.

Qualifications and Registration
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
- Advanced Life support (ALS) accreditation.
Desirable criteria
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MSc).
Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience in a foundation programme approved training post, or equivalent, with evidence of achieving foundation competencies.
- Recent experience of general medical posts.
Further Training, Management, Audit
Essential criteria
- Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
- Experience in audit project and written up.
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
- Knowledge of political context within which we operate.
Desirable criteria
- Completion of a general management course or programme.
- Interest in medical management.
Research, Teaching, Publications
Essential criteria
- Proven teaching ability.
- Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates.
Desirable criteria
- Proven track record in research.
- Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
- Willingness to undertake further research.
- Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
- Ability to teach effectively.
Personal Requirements (e.g. Communication, Leadership Skills, Flexibility)
Essential criteria
- Good written communication skills.
- Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team.
- Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of the medicine division. To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
Any Other General Requirements
Essential criteria
- Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments.
