Job overview

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and knowledgeable Locum Consultant Urological Surgeon (10 PA) with experience in pelvic and robotic surgery to contribute to the elective recovery and continued restoration of the Urology service within North Bristol NHS Trust, delivered at Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital.

Candidates with subspecialty interest(s) complementing the needs of the department are encouraged to apply. The duration of this post will be until 31 March 2026.

Based at Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital the BUI is a tertiary referral centre and is the largest Urology department in the South West and one of the largest in the country, offering care for all urological conditions.  The department is well supported by oncologists from the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and by a group of experienced and dedicated Cancer Nurse Specialists and Specialist Nurse Practitioners. We are a close-knit team, across all levels and value collaborative working.  We also welcome new ideas as we are constantly striving to improve our service to all our patients.

Consultant Urological Surgeon

Full time – 10 PA’s

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bristol Urology Institute (BUI).

The BUI delivers general and specialised urology services in BNSSG, for the larger Urology Area Network and the Southwest.

The BUI is a tertiary referral centre and is the largest Urology department in the South West and one of the largest in the country, offering care for all urological conditions.

 

The BUI has a long history of urological research which has led to developments in the fields of urodynamics, robotic surgery and cancer care.  We are proud of our achievements and keen to continue our successes into the future.

North Bristol NHS Trust is a progressive and ambitious organisation providing hospital and community healthcare. It is a specialist regional centre for Major Trauma, Neurosciences, Plastics and Burns, Orthopaedics and Renal Services with a turnover in excess of £515m. The trust is currently undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in the NHS having moved into the new £430 million hospital in May 2014.

The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training opportunities and will be actively involved in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will also contribute towards the provision of emergency urology services.

The postholder will work a flexible job plan of 10PA per week.  This will assist the department in achieving its targets in both cancer and non-cancer urology.

Qualifications/Registration

Essential criteria
  • FRCS (or equivalent)
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • Must have CCT in Urology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship Training
  • Experience in General and/or LUTS

Further training/mgmt/audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit project and written up
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a general management course or programme.

Research/teaching/publications

Essential criteria
  • Proven teaching ability.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record in research.
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.

Personal Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
