Job overview
The post holder will act as the specialist Clinical Data Analyst for the Urology service, responsible for the development, management, analysis and interpretation of complex clinical datasets supporting patient care, service improvement, audit, and research.
Working autonomously and in collaboration with clinical, managerial and research colleagues, the post holder will design, maintain and interrogate clinical databases, ensuring high standards of data quality, validation and governance. They will provide timely, accurate and clinically meaningful analysis and reporting, enabling benchmarking against national standards and supporting local and national audit and research requirements.
The role will play a key part in translating data into insight, advising the multidisciplinary team on data interpretation, identifying trends, risks and opportunities for service improvement, and supporting evidence-based decision-making across the Urology service.
Main duties of the job
Specialist Clinical Data Analyst for Urology, providing expert advice on clinical data management, quality assurance, governance, and interpretation. Responsible for designing, maintaining, and analysing complex clinical databases, ensuring high-quality data through validation, reconciliation, and governance processes. Produces analytical reports, dashboards, and performance metrics to support clinical governance, quality improvement, audits, research studies, and national benchmarking initiatives.
Leads the management of a tracking database for approximately 850 bladder cancer patients, monitoring treatment pathways, surveillance schedules, and follow-up compliance, while identifying and escalating patient safety risks. Collaborates with clinicians, researchers, and trial teams to support data collection, reporting, and research delivery, including national and international studies. Provides training and guidance to staff, integrates and analyses data from multiple sources, and contributes specialist analytical expertise to service development, grant applications, publications, and quality improvement projects, ensuring compliance with NHS data standards, information governance, and research regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Act as the specialist Clinical Data Analyst for Urology, advising clinicians, managers, and research staff on all aspects of clinical data management, quality, and interpretation.
· Design, develop, maintain and interrogate clinical databases (including SQL-based systems), ensuring high data quality and adherence to governance standards.
· Lead data validation, reconciliation, and quality assurance processes across multiple sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
· Produce regular and ad-hoc analytical reports, dashboards, and performance summaries to support:
§ Clinical governance and quality improvement
§ Local and national audit
§ Research studies, including EuRECA
· Management of My Medical Record for Bladder patients:
§ Manages a tracking database of ~850 bladder cancer patients to monitor pathways, ensure surveillance schedules are met, and prevent loss to follow-up.
§ Identifies pathway delays or uncertainty and escalates to senior clinicians, directly improving patient safety and follow-up compliance.
§ Supports MDT-driven data capture and transition to MMR, enabling automated scheduling and alerts for missed surveillance.
· Interpret complex datasets, identifying trends, outliers, and risks, and present findings in a clinically meaningful way to multidisciplinary teams.
· Manage and submit data for national benchmarking and research projects, ensuring compliance with all definitions, standards, and deadlines.
· Collaborate with clinical trial coordinators, research nurses, and medical colleagues to support data collection, monitoring, and reporting requirements.
· Provide training, guidance, and support to clinical and administrative staff in data collection, database use, and interpretation of outputs.
· Perform complex multi-source data integration and analysis to support audit, quality improvement, and research.
· Contribute to service development and research projects, providing specialist analytical input for grant applications, publications, and service evaluation initiatives.
· Work independently, prioritising and managing workload effectively to meet competing deadlines and project requirements.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of NHS data standards, research governance, and information security, ensuring all datasets comply with national and Trust policies.
· Ensure data governance, confidentiality, and security across all datasets, particularly in research and national trial contexts.
· Contribute to the design and implementation of new data systems or projects within Urology, including database upgrades or national trial reporting tools.
Support grant applications, publications, and service evaluation projects by providing specialist data input and analytical insight.

Essential criteria
- Degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Data Science, Health Informatics, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science) or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development in data analysis, informatics, or NHS data standards
- Advanced training in SQL, data analysis tools, or database management
- Significant experience working with complex datasets (preferably in healthcare or clinical setting)
- Experience of SQL and/or relational database management in a professional environment
- Experience producing analytical reports, dashboards, or performance outputs for clinical, operational, or audit purposes
- Understanding of data quality, information governance, confidentiality, and data protection (e.g. GDPR)
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification or specialist certification in analytics, informatics, or research methods
- Experience supporting clinical audit, research studies, or national data submissions
