Job overview

The Bristol Bath Weston Vascular Network was formed in October 2014. The arterial centre (AC) for the network is Southmead Hospital. The network is responsible for the delivery of both elective and emergency vascular care to the populations of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. This includes all arterial surgery for this population, and in addition varicose vein treatments, diabetic foot care, deep venous intervention (thrombolysis and stenting) and renal access. The population served by the network is 1.12 million. In addition, the network provides complex endovascular services (fenestrated, branched and thoracic stent grafts) for the 3.5 million population of the South West. The networked hospitals are North Bristol, University Hospitals Bristol & Weston, and Royal United Hospital Bath.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to manage elective and emergency vascular patients. This includes in the operating theatre, outpatient clinics, ward cover and emergency admissions. There is a middle grade vascular on call rota. This is a 1 in 7 day rota with non-resident on call overnight. Weekend cover is split.

There are two vascular lists daily providing ample opportunities for training in both open and endovascular surgery. Outpatient clinics will take place both at the AC and at three networked hospitals (Bristol Royal Infirmary, Royal United Hospital Bath and Weston General Hospital). There is a specialist vascular ward with a daily (365 days per year) Consultant led ward round. There is in addition the opportunity to attend interventional radiology lists either at the MAC or two networked hospitals. There are endovenous lists at the AC and at RUH Bath.

The post-holder will be expected to provide supervision and support for more junior surgical trainees within his/her competence. Although the post does not have postgraduate approval for training, assessment of progression will be by continual assessment with use of PBA (procedure based assessment).  The post-holder will be provided with formal documentation of their level of competence on completion of the post.

The Clinical Fellow will be required to take part in the vascular surgery on-call rota.
