Applications are invited for a permanent post of Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Bristol Heart Institute. We are looking for an experienced and outstanding individual to join our existing team.

Our staff offer over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites. We provide general medical and emergency services to the local population of Central and South Bristol, and a broad range of specialist services across a region that extends from Cornwall to Gloucestershire, into South Wales and beyond. The Bristol Heart Institute was opened in 2009 and it delivers 1100-1200 adult cardiac operations on an annual basis. You will be joining an outstanding and dynamic team of surgeons with an international clinical and academic reputation. Our centre specialises in the whole range of modern adult cardiac surgery procedures. There are 4 fully equipped modern cardiac surgery theatres, of which one is hybrid (shared with Cardiology). Critical care support is provided within a state-of-the-art 24 bedded Critical Care facility staffed by dedicated cardiac intensive care specialists.
Main duties of the job
This post will offer excellent clinical, teaching, governance and research facilities with possibilities to contribute and/or lead to develop/consolidate our surgical service in adult cardiac surgery to the highest level.
Applicants must have GMC registration, possess FRCS (CTh-UK) or equivalent having completed a higher surgical training programme in Cardiothoracic Surgery and show robust log book evidence of their surgical experience.

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register
- Member of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Additional Postgraduate qualification, e.g. MD/PhD
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of the UK health system
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the speciality of adult cardiac surgery
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients without direct supervision
- Training to consultant level with independent operator experience in cardiac surgery with a validated portfolio of operations and risk stratified outcomes
Desirable criteria
- Special interest in mitral, aortic, or minimally invasive surgery
Clinical Knowledge and skills

- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
