Job overview
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust (UHBWFT) seeks applicants for 12-month Clinical Fellow posts, in Critical Care, at SHO / ST1-2 level to commence August 2026 to meet the increasing demand for critical care services within the trust.
UHBWFT includes the Emergency Departments (ED) of Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), Bristol Children’s Hospital and Weston General Hospital (WGH). Both BRI and WGH provide intensive care services. This post will be based in the adult BRI ED service and the adult BRI intensive care service. The post provides an ideal opportunity for the successful candidate to work in a busy inner city university hospital which forms part of a large tertiary referral centre for several specialities including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
This post comprises six months of Intensive Care Medicine and six months of Emergency Medicine. The total duration of the appointment is 12 months.
All BRI Clinical Fellows have an Educational Supervisor, within the relevant department, and access to the 14 Fish portfolio platform provided by the Trust. Successful applicants will have access to full support and advice for career progression.
Salary will be calculated by HR and will be fully compliant with the current national regulations.
Main duties of the job
Intensive Care
The post would be suitable for trainees who have completed Foundation or core speciality training and will offer the successful applicant an opportunity to develop their skills in Intensive Care Medicine. You will join a highly motivated team of medical, nursing and allied health professionals. The full shift rota comprises shifts across the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU), the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and Critical Care Outreach. You will gain experience in a number of different organ support modes including respiratory, cardiovascular and renal support. The candidate could expect to gain skills in airway management, invasive monitoring and ultrasound. Participation in audit and research is encouraged.
Emergency Medicine
UHBWFT is one of the busiest EDs in the Southwest having over 70,000 adult attendances per year. and of high acuity and reflect the broad spectrum of patients attending an inner-city ED which forms part of a large tertiary referral centre for several specialities including cardiology, with 24 hour PPCI availability, and cardiothoracic surgery.
The post participates in a 24-hour full shift, fully compliant, SHO / ST1-2 rota and benefits from seven day a week consultant cover up until midnight and 24 hour registrar grade support. This post would be ideal for any candidate planning a career in Emergency Medicine, or any acute speciality, and is also suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in General Practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Managerial
The management responsibility of the post holder will be to the Clinical Director who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation, including audit. Clinical audit is well established at the BRI and post holders will be required to participate in at least one supervised audit project during the 12-month post
BRI ED is an academic department with an active research programme. The department has a good reputation for teaching and training as evidenced by our recent performance in the GMC Trainee’s survey. We include both traditional and modern (SIM, podcasts, e-learning) teaching methods in our teaching programme which Clinical Fellows are given rostered time to attend.
The ED rota operates a full shift system with a balanced mix of early, middle, late and night shifts.

- • B) have the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6.

Qualifications & Training

- • At least 6 months previous NHS clinical experience (not observing)
- • Full registration with the GMC, with a licence to practice, at time of application
- • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards
- • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice)
- • Fitness to practice is up to date and fit to practice safety
- • No unexplained career gaps
- • At least 24 months’ experience¹ (at FY1/2 level) in appropriate posts
- • Advanced Life Support Provider

- • MRCP / MRCS (Part 1) or equivalent
