Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team as a Housekeeper. You will work alongside another Housekeeper to ensure a clean, safe and comfortable environment and act as a focal point for non-clinical tasks. You will co-ordinate the delivery of ward stores and cleaning. Support the Technician to co-ordinate and oversee maintenance and repairs, together with other specified tasks to meet the needs of the ward. The role involves great team working alongside the NICU team, support services, facilities and other departments.

Main duties of the job

The Post Holder will: -

·Work as an integral part of the ward team.

·Ensure a clean, safe and comfortable environment and act as a focal point for non-clinical tasks.

·Co-ordinate the delivery of ward stores and cleaning.

·Support the Unit Technician to co-ordinate and oversee maintenance and repairs, together with other specified tasks to meet the needs of the ward.

·Work closely with support services, Facilities Management, and other  departments as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Cleaning:

· To assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning to manufacturers guidance.

· To ensure spot cleaning and spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently by domestic staff, identifying any problems with cleanliness.

· To ensure the ward is safe and tidy at all times, e.g. remove clutter, tidy areas and ensure signs are in place.

· To support cleaning & maintain upkeep of patient areas.

· To ensure specialist cleaning of surfaces and furnishings.

· To ensure isolation nursing areas are cleaned appropriately.

Maintain the Environment:

· To carry out monitoring of service delivery, especially related to cleaning, Temperature monitoring, water flushing and monitoring at the agreed frequency.

· To inform the ward manager of outcomes of monitoring and agree actions plans, ensuring they are implemented.

· To carry out regular equipment monitoring in accordance with procedures

· To undertake onsite cleaning and handling of unit linen, patient clothing and developmental aids.

· To clean incubators and any other relevant patient equipment daily.

· To monitor the access and security, and use of premises and facilities.

· To ensure that patient and family space is respected

· To assist in maintaining the safety of people’s property and belongings

· To use communication skills to manage any aggressive and abusive behaviour. 

· To ensure the safe storage of equipment and organisation of store rooms.

· To ensure repairs and maintenance to equipment and environment are carried out in line with Trust policy and Estates and MEMO procedure.

· To ensure that waste is managed correctly.

General:

· To ensure parents and visitors feel welcome, liaising with other staff as appropriate.

· To maintain and update records and information as required.

· To respond to requests for general information.

· To receive and pass on information to others, maintaining confidentiality.

· To take appropriate actions when hearing complaints or compliments.

· To assist with training of staff on ward housekeeping services.

· To ensure own actions reduce risks to health and safety and to promote a health & safety culture within the workplace.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • GCSE A-C English or equivalent e.g. certificate in adult literacy level 2
  • GCSE A-C Maths or equivalent e.g. certificate in numeracy level 1

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in a Health and Social Care setting
  • Can demonstrate personal development
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors and other members of staff
  • Ability to successfully complete any required training programme and a willingness to continue learning
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and contribute to that team
