Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Liaison Psychiatry Service . You will have a real passion for mental health care & be able to work in a challenging & dynamic environment.

As a Specialist Psychiatric Nurse you will be committed to providing high quality acute assessment in the Emergency Department & provide ongoing care & expertise to any patient admitted to our hospital with co-morbid psychiatric care needs. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from RMNs with experience of providing therapies, such as CBT or EMDR.

Therefore, we are seeking a confident & accomplished practitioner to join our accredited service & join the shared vision of 'high quality care for all'.

The ideal candidate must have at least 2 years of experience of acute (Crisis/Liaison) assessment at Band 6 level or above.

This is a full-time (1.00 wte) permanent post.

Main duties of the job

Your main duties include seeing, assessing & treating patients that are attending acute services, primarily in the Emergency Department. This may include delivering a range of nursing & psychosocial interventions to individual patients & their families, as appropriate. You are likely to be assisting & supporting general hospital colleagues in making decisions about treatment & care in complex situations.

You will be working within a team but often as an autonomous clinical specialist within the general hospital.  Your role also requires consultation, liaison & teaching general hospital staff at all levels.

The Service runs from 0700-2100hrs, 7days a week & you will be required to work shifts covering evenings & weekends for this. The Service may extend to provide 24hr care, with possible Commissioning changes.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post registration experience - min 2 years - mental health nursing at Band 6 or above
  • Extensive knowledge of the various approaches to mental health assessment
  • Experience of working autonomously and therapeutically in residential/community settings
  • Knowledge of key areas of liaison psychiatry practice, including the psychological effects of physical illness
  • Knowledge of the clinical and demographic risk factors associated with self-harm and suicide
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and the Mental Health Act and their use in the general hospital
  • Knowledge of working therapeutically with individuals following self-harm
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in Acute Mental Health care settings

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Skills in assessing, planning implementing and evaluating mental health nursing interventions
  • Ability to interact therapeutically with distressed and/or disturbed individuals and/or those in crisis
  • Skills in interacting effectively with colleagues from a range of specialties and departments
  • Evidence of effective organisational and time management skills
  • Effective verbal & written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the teaching process, skills in teaching to a range of levels of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Skills in complex report writing

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • RMN with First Degree or equivalent
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised qualification in delivering therapeutic inventions
  • Post qualification Master’s Degree or equivalent experience
