Job overview
We are delighted to invite applications for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist to join our enthusiastic and dynamic multidisciplinary Paediatric Gastroenterology team. This is a full-time (1.0 WTE) locum position for a minimum of 12 months, covering parental leave, with an anticipated start date 1st Jul 2025.
Our team provides a comprehensive, high-quality tertiary Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition service across the South West of England. Based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), we serve a regional population of over one million children. The hospital is a principal teaching center closely linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England (UWE), offering excellent opportunities for research, undergraduate, and postgraduate education.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic consultant to join our existing team of six consultants (5.7 WTE). The successful candidate will contribute to our high-standard tertiary service and work within a well-established and supportive multidisciplinary team.
Applicants must:
- Hold a CCT in General Paediatrics (or be within six months of completion) or an equivalent qualification.
- Have at least two years of sub-specialty training in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in an approved institution.
- Be on, or eligible for, the GMC Sub-Specialty Register for Paediatric Gastroenterology (preferred).

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- CCT or Equivalent in Paediatric Gastroenterology or within 6 months of completing
Desirable criteria
- Full GMC specialist register of Paediatric Gastroenterology
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in relevant specialty
- Ability to take responsibility and initiate management plan effectively( close support available)
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Experience of working in the UK
Clinical Knowledge and skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
- Skills in diagnostic endoscopy independently although recognising the department will support new Consultants in optimising their endoscopy skills
Desirable criteria
- Broad range of IT skills
- Experience in managing patients with complex needs
Clinical Governance and Audit
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
- Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates evidence based practice
- Evidence of initiatives for service development
Research
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the principals involved in research
- Evidence of involvement in research

Teaching and Training
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching medical students
- Experience in providing department teaching

- Experience of supervising specialist trainees.
- Train the trainers course for colonoscopy
Management & Leadership
Essential criteria
- Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
- Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
- Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
- Ability to practice independently as a consultant
- Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
- Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
Desirable criteria
- Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures
- Management experience
Interpersonal, communication and team working skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
- Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
- Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
- Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions
