Job overview

Applications are invited for a fellow post within the department of paediatric anaesthesia at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC).

This fixed-term post starts in August 2025 and runs for 12 months, although the option to take up the post for 6 may be possible by mutual agreement. It is intended to give the experience and skills required for a consultant post within paediatric anaesthesia in a specialist centre or in a district general hospital. It is based in the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW).

BRHC is the Regional Children’s Hospital for the South West. It contains the regional PICU & retrieval service. A 31-cot NICU within the trust is the regional centre for cardiac and surgical referrals. 

 

The department provides anaesthesia for:

 

  • Interventional Cardiology & Cardiac surgery
  • General Paediatric & Neonatal surgery
  • Urology
  • Renal (including transplantation)
  • Orthopaedic
  • Oncology/Haematology (including Bone Marrow Transplantation)
  • Dental
  • ENT surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Burns/Plastics
  • Cleft
  • Scoliosis Surgery
  • Ophthalmology

 

There is a perioperative pain service run by two of the consultants and five dedicated pain nurses.

 

Up to three months of the post (12 month post) can be spent working in paediatric intensive care, which may include shifts for the regional retrieval service WATCh, if desired.

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibility of the post holder is to participate in the service provided by the Anaesthetic Department through a programme of accompanied and unaccompanied theatre sessions. The post holder will have additional duties on-call, supporting the pain service during the daytime and out of hours.

The candidate will take part in the registrar on-call rota, up to 1:8 frequency, which is compliant with the EWTD and new junior doctor contract.

Fellows are encouraged to take part in departmental projects (audit, quality improvement, research etc.) and will be supported to carry out their own projects.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MB BS/MB ChB (or Equivalent)
  • Final FRCA or approved equivalent
  • CCT (or equivalent)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of paediatric anaesthesia and ability to deliver safe anaesthetic service in the operating theatre and intensive care unit
  • Knowledge of post-operative pain management
  • Competent in preoperative, postoperative care and ongoing management of patients
Desirable criteria
  • At least six months specialist paediatric anaesthetic training
