Job overview

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is a specialised tertiary hospital, often taking the most complex referrals from both local and national centres and a designated major trauma centre for the South West of England.

The successful candidate will provide highly specialist physiotherapy for children undergoing orthopaedic/neurosurgery, within Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.  The majority of the caseload will involve the management of children with cerebral palsy but there will be scope to see children with no underlying neurological condition.

The postholder will take a lead role in the pre and post operative assessment of children referred for orthopaedic intervention and will take an active role in their rehabilitation.

The postholder will assist in the development of the service as a member of the multidisciplinary team and provide a source of expertise locally, nationally and internationally.

The postholder will be required to participate in the 24/7 oncall rota.  Full training will be provided.

The role will offer the candidate an excellent opportunity to work within an experienced paediatric Orthopaedic team, working alongside Consultants, Nurse Specialists, Occupational Therapists and Orthotists.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a highly specialised service that includes the assessment, treatment and management of children referred for orthopaedic surgery or intervention, assisting in the development, planning and progression of service provision.
  • To provide specialist advice and intervention to children undergoing interventions such as selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) and botulinum toxin
  • To act as a source of expertise and demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in the highly skilled management of children requiring rehabilitation.
  • To provide specialist advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team and to provide clinical education and training to others within the Trust and externally.
  • To take a lead role in the management of more difficult and complex neuro-orthopaedic cases within a multi-disciplinary team approach, acting as an autonomous practitioner. The caseload will include inpatients, outpatients and attendance at multidisciplinary clinics/meetings.
  • To assist across the neurosciences and orthopaedic physiotherapy service, supporting colleagues to provide suitable rehabilitation opportunities for all patients.
