Consultant General Urologist - Part Time 6 pas

Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant Urological Surgeon in at the Bristol Urology Institute (BUI) based at Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Urology, have CCT in Urology or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. 

Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

Based at Southmead Hospital, & Weston General Hospital the BUI is a tertiary referral centre and is the largest Urology department in the South West and one of the largest in the country, offering care for all urological conditions.  The department is well supported by oncologists from the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and by a group of experienced and dedicated Cancer Nurse Specialists and Specialist Nurse Practitioners. 

The department has state of the art theatre facilities including 4 dedicated urology theatres, with 2 Da Vinci X Robots to support its oncological work as the Network Centre.  The robot is routinely used for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy plus reconstruction, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty. The robotic program is continuously expanding.

Main duties of the job

 The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the post-holder is absent.
- As part of the division’s target to expand theatre usage and improve theatre utilisation, the post-holder, with other consultants, will provide flexible theatre cover as part of their weekly programmed activities in addition to a rotational Saturday list aimed at providing extra capacity to meet cancer and RTT targets.
- The post-holder with contribute to the on call consultant and consultant of the week rota.
- The post-holder will be expected to deliver regular clinical sessions in neighbouring trusts as part of outreach specialist clinics.

Person specification

Qualifications/Registration

Essential criteria
  • FRCS (or equivalent)
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • Must have CCT in Urology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship Training
  • Experience in General and/or LUTS

Further training/mgmt/audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit project and written up
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a general management course or programme.

Research/teaching/publications

Essential criteria
  • Proven teaching ability.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record in research.
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.

Personal Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
