Job overview

We are seeking a motivated individual to join our enthusiastic and friendly Point of Care testing team, which is based within the Blood Sciences Department at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. 

Pathology at North Bristol NHS Trust has undergone redevelopment in recent years the building of state of the art laboratories at Southmead Hospital. All pathology disciplines including a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service, UK Health Security Agency and Genomics service are located within one facility.The Blood sciences department encompasses Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, and Immunology and offers a broad range of routine and specialist services. 

The post holder will be responsible, under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Blood Sciences management team, for the day-to-day operation of the Point of care testing (POCT) service across North Bristol NHS Trust. Although primarily based in Blood Sciences the role will require interaction with colleagues across pathology including Infection sciences and Genetics.

This post provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for suitably experienced, qualified and motivated Healthcare professionals. The successful candidate must be HCPC state registered with knowledge and experience within the area of Point of care testing. Completion of the IBMS certificate of expert practice in POCT would also be desirable.

The successful candidate will be responsible, under the overall direction of the Clinical Lead and Blood Sciences management team, for the day-to-day operational matters of the Point of care testing (POCT) service across North Bristol NHS Trust.

To be responsible, under the overall direction of the Clinical Lead and Blood Sciences management team, for the day-to-day operational matters of the Point of care testing (POCT) service across North Bristol NHS Trust.

To be responsible for the operational planning and implementation of policies, procedures and guidance relating to POCT services across the Trust.

To ensure that all POCT carried out within North Bristol NHS Trust is carried out to the appropriate standards set by expert external bodies.

To be responsible for ensuring systems are in place for the maintenance and service of all POCT equipment.

To be responsible for the development, planning and provision of training and competency checking for all staff using POCT equipment across the Trust.

To be responsible for and maintain External Quality Assurance schemes for POCT.

To provide expert advice to clinicians and senior managers regarding POCT.

In collaboration with the POCT Chair and Clinical Governance committees across the Trust, be responsible for the co-ordination, documentation and planning of the future POCT requirements of the Trust.

To ensure that all POCT equipment is purchased, operated, and controlled in a manner that is consistent with the Trust POCT policy.

The post-holder is required to maintain state registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health Professions Council.

Experience

  • 4 years post graduate experience in Blood Science discipline
  • Experience of supporting Point of care services to clinical areas

  • Experience of staff management e.g. training, supervision, organisational and appraisal

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently, managing own workload and that of others within the department
