Job overview

Post: Clinical Fellow in Urology ST3+ based at Weston General Hospital

The Bristol Urological Institute wishes to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Urology ST3+, initially for one year with further extension dependent on satisfactory progress. 

It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent.

Overseas applicants are expected to be eligible for registration with the General Medical Council and have passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall score of 7.5. This must be clearly outlined on application. Please check the GMC website for details.

Weston General Hospital offers core Urology services through the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI).

Main duties of the job

Work of the Department 

The cases dealt with in Weston are mainly General Urology with a tertiary referral service provided for urethroplasty and penile cancer. The department offers primary management of all common urological conditions. Cases requiring specialised management are referred to Southmead Hospital.

To supervise and assist the CT2 and Staff Grade in the care of  patients.

On Call 

1, Daytime On-Call responsibilities involve seeing emergencies & SDEC patients on a 3 weekly rota. 

2. This arrangement allows, in the weeks not on-call, to gain experience in theatres, out-patients and for diagnostics

Audit / Study / Research

1. To participate in the all stages of the audit process, including conception, data retrieval & analysis, and presentation.

2. To use study time appropriately for preparation for the FRCS Urol examination, or to prepare talks on suitable urological topics for presentation at the monthly audit meetings.

3. To participate in research topics being run by the department

4. To continue & complete any outstanding research projects including writing up of papers and / or thesis.

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Evidence of training progression
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
  • Prizes
  • ATLS/ALS

Work Experience

Essential criteria
  • Skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 3 years post graduate experience in an approved training post, or equivalent
  • Experience of urology post graduate training.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of previous urology on call at registrar level.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of speciality
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate
  • Experience in the management of elective and emergency urology patients.
  • Experience of basic life support and resuscitation skills
  • Accepts responsibility and able to take leadership role for ward based emergencies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of core urology procedures (Cystoscopy, TURP, TURBT, Torsion, Stenting …etc)

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives

  • Ability to organise own learning
