Job overview

As University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) has recently expanded the Gastroenterology service based at Weston General Hospital, we are pleased to advertise the exciting opportunity for a Fixed Term Consultant in Gastroenterology with General (Internal) Medicine. This will be for an initial period of seven months from September 2025 until March 2026; however we are confident that this will be extended pending financial approval. The main site for this post will be Weston General Hospital, but as we move to full clinical service integration across UHBW, it is anticipated that there will be an element of cross-site working with Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), to be determined through the job planning process.

The successful candidate will develop special interests to extend the spectrum of the gastroenterology services offered at Weston, and support services currently being developed in the department. The post holder will undertake general gastroenterology clinics and support the endoscopy service with both upper and lower endoscopy procedures. Weston General Hospital is JAG accredited and is proud to have retained this for over 10 years. We pride ourselves on providing an exceptional service. There will be inpatient responsibility for the gastroenterology ward on a 1:4 rotational basis. The post includes a commitment to the emergency endoscopy rota (1:6) plus the G(I)M on-call rota out of hours (1:11).

Main duties of the job

The Gastroenterology team at WGH has recently been expanded to four Consultants and provides a full range of general Gastroenterology services, with specialist Hepatology providing a visiting outpatient service to the population of North Somerset and adjacent rural areas. Outpatient services are managed by the Division of Medicine and endoscopy sits under the Division of Surgery with close working relationships with the management teams of these services.
We have a strong tradition of providing excellent education within our department which has been recognised by HEE. This has allowed us to attract high quality candidates to our training posts. The ward work at WGH is supported by 3 middle grades (1 HEE SpR and 2 clinical fellows); an IMT and/or an SHO with an F2/GPST; 3 F1 doctors; and an experienced Physician Associate.

The post is advertised as a 10 PA post, but candidates wishing to be considered for a position with additional or fewer sessions are welcome to apply. The appointment of this position will be part of the 1:11 current consultant on call rota.

Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of their CCT and ideally have NHS experience.
