The Department of General Anaesthesia sits within the Division of Surgery; however the wider anaesthesia service bridges four clinical divisions of UHBW: Surgery (general anaesthesia and critical care), Specialised Services (cardiac anaesthesia), Women’s and Children’s (paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia) and Weston Business Unit. The Department of Anaesthesia is seeking one Locum Consultant in General Anaesthesia to join the team based at Weston General Hospital for 6-12 months. The post will be offered at 10 PAs. The successful candidate will join the team in supporting a busy and high quality service providing general anaesthesia in a small hospital, with the support of and close work with the wider department across all UHBW sites
Main duties of the job
The role will be based at Weston General Hospital, and will support the provision of general anaesthesia services for a variety of specialties, including Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Gynaecology and Urology. There may be opportunity to work across the UHBW sites; however applicants should expect the majority of their work to focus on Weston. In addition to daytime sessions, the appointee will participate in the weekend on-call rota (1:7) and in the evening session (approx. 1:10) covering emergency operations until 20:00 every day. The Department of Anaesthesia supports the pre-operative assessment service, and the acute pain service, and as such the appointee will contribute to these areas. As UHBW is a teaching trust with close links to the University of Bristol; the appointee will be committed to delivering excellent teaching and training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Candidates are required to hold full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with license to practise. We are looking for candidates who are able to evidence broad training and experience in the specialties offered at Weston General Hospital, and who are willing to share their knowledge and experience with trainees and junior colleagues. Although there may be opportunity to develop a special interest, we are looking for applicants who are willing to work flexibly to ensure smooth service delivery. Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective – including anaesthesia for upper and lower abdominal surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology and urology
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Log-book evidence of general surgical cases, trauma and orthopaedics, urology, breast Pre-operative assessment, acute Pain
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of advanced training in specialist areas; particularly regional anaesthesia, acute Pain, Upper and lower GI, POAC
- Evidence of developing a specialist service or demonstration of innovation in chosen sub-speciality area
Research

- Evidence of relevant publications or regional or national presentations

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in Anaesthesia or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
- FRCA or equivalent
- Experience of teaching medical students
Desirable criteria
- Experience in use of simulation training and organisation of simulation courses for anaesthesia or medicine
