Job overview
We have a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant position in our busy and thriving Acute elderly care ward working at Stoke Mandeville Hospital as part of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
Communication with patients and staff members on a daily basis
Assisting or prompting with washing and dressing of patients
Checking of patient skin for pressure damage
Assisting or prompting with toileting and promoting continence
Assisting or prompting with catheter care and continence assessments and product selection
Assisting or prompting with food and fluids
Dressing and promotion of our 'Get up, Get dressed Get moving' campaign
Adhere to the Trust policy for the safe keeping of patients’ personal possessions.
Undertake cleaning and correct storage of equipment at the direction of the Nurse in Charge.
Report faulty equipment in need of repair
Assist with unpacking and checking of stores as required
Report when ward stock is low.
Clean and tidy lockers and cupboards.
Clean beds and lockers after discharge of patient according to hospital policy
Answer patient call-bells and take appropriate action.
Assist in the general cleanliness and tidiness of ward area including kitchen, sluice and storerooms.
Following appropriate training and when deemed competent, use equipment within own department at the direction of nurse in charge.
Participate in an annual performance review.
Understand the importance of fire precautions and is aware of hospital policy regarding emergency procedures for example fire, cardiac arrest and major incident.
Observational monitoring and reporting to Nurse / Nurse in charge
Reporting any concerns to Nurse or Nurse in Charge.

EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with people, ideally in a front-line customer service role
Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing person centred care
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Desirable criteria
- Level 2 or Level 3 (NVQ) in health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience
- Willing to work towards Level 2 functional skills (Math & English)
- Care Certificate/working towards
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCE
Essential criteria
- An understanding of the importance of patient confidentially and privacy
- Demonstrates a caring, compassionate and empathetic approach to patient’s and colleagues, whilst having a professional approach
- Recognises how patients and colleagues need to be treated with dignity and respect and can demonstrate these behaviours in their daily work.
- Good verbal and written English communication skills.
- The ability to respond with kindness and humanity to patients
- A flexible and adaptable approach with the aptitude to work in a busy hospital healthcare setting.
- Willingness to undertake the mentorship of new Nursing Assistants after 12 months in post.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety with an awareness of the importance of following Trust policies and procedures
- An appreciation of equality, diversity and inclusion and how this influences how care is provided to patients
- A willingness to provide the highest standards of patient care including personal care
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good understanding of care needs relevant to patient’s in a hospital setting to include: Eating and drinking Dignity and respect Communication/conflict resolution Handwashing and infection control Hygiene needs Safeguarding Understands the limit and scope of their job role and the need to only do tasks they are trained to do. Knows when to escalate to a registered nurse when the situation is beyond their scope of practice
