Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated Phlebotomist to join our Phlebotomy team at Buckinghamshire  Healthcare NHS Trust (across our three sites ; Stoke Mandeville, High Wycombe and Amersham Hospital) the duties will include preparing the testing room with the proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples and labelling samples for further analysis in medical laboratories. The position is open to applicants who are able to job share.

Please note that previous applicants within the past 12 months will not be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • To receive patients in a polite, understanding and efficient manner
  • To communicate the testing procedure, putting all involved at ease, giving clear instructions on any pre-test preparation requirements, e.g. fasting or urine collections
  • To communicate with patients, parents, carers and children in a caring manner and obtain lawful consent to perform an invasive procedure.
  • To check patient details against the request form submitted
  • To be able to deal with distressed patients
  • To follow all departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and contribute to new improved ways of working.
  •  Ensure that patients are treated safely and courteously, causing the minimum of distress or discomfort throughout the blood sampling procedure.
  • To provide advice to patients and clinical staff on the appropriate collection  requirements for samples.
  • To deal with patients and clinical staff initial enquiries and to relay to senior staff where necessary.
  •  To deal with ward patients, who may be confused or distressed, in a caring understanding way offering the highest quality service to all the patients
  • To follow strict uniform and hand hygiene policy in all areas at all times.
  •  To prepare glucose solutions for patients having Glucose Tolerance
  • Tests in a safe manner according to the relevant SOP.
  • To visit other Hospital sites, GP clinics and Domestic homes to provide phlebotomy services at these locations.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Desirable criteria
  • GCSE PASS IN MATHS AND ENGLISH
  • HCA or Nursing qualification
  • NVQ in a ‘Health Science’

EXPERIENCE
