Job overview

A 9-12 month fixed term contract (maternity cover) has arisen for a specialist Dietitian in spinal cord injury (31 hours per week) at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust based at the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

You will join our thriving, 40 strong Nutrition and Dietetic department based in Buckinghamshire. We work from bases in Amersham, Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe.

This specialist spinal injuries post is ideal for existing Band 5 Dietitians wishing to move to the next stage of their career Band 6 Dietitians wishing to specialise in the field of spinal cord injury within our World renowned National Spinal Injuries Centre.  Applicants with less practice in this field who are highly motivated will also be considered. Teamwork and excellent communication skills are essential for this role.

This post offers a fantastic opportunity to gain a variety of skills
across the spinal service:  spinal injury, acute and rehab wards, complex nutrition support as well as clinical audit, with supervision and mentoring from the Lead Dietitian in Spinal Injuries.

We actively encourage CPD, clinical supervision and participation in specialist teams to develop our service. The department has excellent secretarial and IT support, and we also take dietetic students for B and C placements.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the dietetic team to provide Nutrition and Dietetic services to inpatients within the National Spinal Injuries Centre [NSIC].
  • To provide support for Dietitians, Dietetic Assistants and Student Dietitians across the Nutrition and dietetics Service.
  • To provide specialised assessment, treatment and support of patients requiring dietetic treatment.

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree or post-grad equivalent in Dietetics
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Member of BDA
  • member of relevant specialist group of the BDA
  • evidence of post grad study or equivalent, in relevant area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • experience of complex nutritional assessment and care planning
  • Experience of student supervision, assessment and feedback
  • Experience of Enteral nutrition
  • Experience of MDT working
  • Experience of EF discharge planning and coordination
  • Experience in monitoring and developing EN regimens
  • Experience in assessment for enteral feeding, products, equipment and regimens
  • Accurate anthropometric skills
  • Student training experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of neurological conditions and/or spinal cord injury
  • Experience of using a variety of anthropometric measurement techniques

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of commonly used feeding systems
  • Awareness of regulatory bodies (HCPC) and professional bodies (BDA) code of practice and professional guidelines
  • to engage in CPD and dept appraisal system
  • Competent user of IT equipment and basic software (email, RIO)
  • To be able to communicate clearly and concisely to both staff and patients
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own caseload and time
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and evidence based practice.
  • Ability to plan and deliver training sessions to health care professionals
